32nd Trofeo Attilio StrazziApril 16, 2002Report by Brian Stephens, AIS Yesterday the AIS Mapei Aqua squad was on the Italian, Liguria coast for the Trofeo Strazzi, a 150km elite race. The course included two big climbs of about 15km each followed by a long decent and a 15km flat run into the finish. The action started on the first climb with about 80 riders being shed including Bruce McIntosh. Ashley Humbert put himself in a promising break of 25 over the climb but it was eventually hauled in just before after being clear for about 20km. The real selection was made on the second climb where we lost Ashley as well as Daniel Mackey, David Pell and Gene Bates. Thirty-nine riders made the front group over the climb including Dave McPartland, Adrian Laidler and Jeremy Yates. The group split on the descent with 15 riders getting clear and all our guys missing the split. They tried in vain to close the gap and had to be content to race for the left-over placings. Jeremy easily outsprinted the remainder while the race was won by Pole, Tomasz Dejewski.
