Silver Pail Grand Prix

Fermoy, March 23

Barry claims traditional victory

Tommy Campbell, Irish Independent/Evening Herald/Sunday Independent

Carrick Cidona Cycling Club yet again claimed victory in the Silver Pail Grand Prix yesterday afternoon in Fermoy but it was Timmy Barry who kept the tradition to the fore. Last year it was Martin O'Loughlin, but unfortunately he his sidelined due to an accident whilst out training last month.

A very competitive field assembled for the 4th edition of the race with the winner receiving the DJ Forde Trophy for his exploits over five laps of a Fermoy/ Coleagawn circuit.

There simply was no let up in the action and virtually the race had only just settled into a rhythm before the racing began in earnest for the 95 competitors.

Ten went ahead and for the remainder of the race they were entact as he shared the responsibility of keeping the tempo up, thus keeping the chasers at bay.

Mid-way through the final lap, Barry accelerated forward leaving his companions in some disarray as he powered home to record his first win of the season, and also keeping the winning tradition in the club secure. Back in second place was Eddie O'Donoghue who jumped ship from the Carrick club to join the Usher IRC during the off season 20 seconds off the winner along with David Nugent from the Western Lakes club.

This was 10th year of the sponsorship by the Silver Pail Dairy.
