Cycleways-Lee Strand Grand Prix.

Narraghmore, Kildare, July 21, 2002

By Tommy Campbell, Irish Independent, Evening Herald, Sunday Independent

Last Sunday week in Monaghan, Sean Bracken was the toasting his success as Veteran Irish Champion and yesterday in Narraghmore, Co. Kildare he showed up his younger rivals with a timely win in the Cycleways-Lee Strand Grand Prix.

The action in the 68 mile event began within two miles of the start when Stephen O'Sullivan, Tommy Hughes, Paul Doyle and Philip Cassidy clipped off the front of the main pack. The quartet steadily drew clear and for three laps they worked well together to keep a brisk pace, which kept the chasers at bay. At the start of the fourth passage of seven, O'Sullivan ignited pace into the group, which saw him, forge ahead and for the next three laps he was the lone leader. On the penultimate lap he simply ran out of steam and was joined by a number of chasers including the eventual winner Bracken.

In the sprint to the line Bracken used his expertise to outwit Brian Lennon who had left the remnants of the leaders to forge ahead.

As for O'Sullivan who looked all over a winner until headed, "I simply miscounted the laps and ultimately paid the penalty," said Stephen who since early May has not aligned himself to a club.
