Gene Moriarty Trophy

Listowel, August 4, 2002

O'Sullivan comes good

By Tommy Campbell, Irish Independent, Evening Herald, Sunday Independent

What better place than Listowel to record one of your most important wins in your cycling career. Stephen O'Sullivan who has been without a club for the last three months came good in the Gene Moriarty Trophy event held over 60 miles in the general area of the town.

It was significant that not one break established itself on the 10 mile circuit. Evidently all the fancied candidates were up to the task of attempting to win one of the most prestigious trophies in Irish cycling. In the end it came down to a mass sprint with the Dubliner, O'Sullivan getting to the finishing line in first place ahead of former winner, Martin O'Loughlin. According to race organiser, Tadhg Moriarty, "It was appropriate that 'Sullie' as I call him got the verdict. He has long been a supporter of this event and at last he has a trophy and a cheque to bring back home." It was also a day to remember for Bobby Power who won the Grand Prix held in conjunction with the feature event. Power last won here in 1976 when he won a stage of the Ras.
