Phoenix Grand PrixBelfast, March 23, 2003Scintillating Evans pops home for a winTommy Campbell, Irish Independent/Evening Herald/Sunday Independent Last month in Malaysia, Tommy Evans was mixing it with the world's elite in cycling in the Telekom Malaysia le Tour de Langkawi but yesterday he was back on familiar territory and it proved to be a winning one. Tommy (Total Cycling/Lindsay Cars) was in scintillating form as he won easily the Phoenix Grand Prix in Belfast at the Nutts Corner circuit. He is home from his base in France where he races with VC la Pomme. The biggest field in the province of the year took part in the Phoenix 85 kms. To make matters interesting, it was a handicap event which went off in four groups, separated by 2 minutes but, after only one of the six laps, the first two groups and the second two groups had merged with 2.31 between the two big bunches. On the final circuit Tommy put his superior form on the line as he powered away to register a well-deserved victory. In second place was Paul Kane with Gary Cranston in third place.
