Batterstown Grand PrixCo. Meath, March 9, 2003Opportunist Aherne takes BatterstownBy Tommy Campbell Brian Aherne of the St. Tiernan's cycling club in Balinteer, Co. Dublin took an opportunist break to win the Batterstown Grand Prix held over 40 miles in Co. Meath yesterday. Aherne took the initiative as the riders headed out on the last lap of the Dunsany/Dunshaughlin course, which was covered on three occasions. There were many spirited attempts to reel back the U-23 cyclist, but he stuck resolutely to his task to come home all of 20 seconds ahead of Shane Baker of the Usher Irish Road Club who led in a group of five with the remainder of the 150 starters all of three minutes in arrears. Only last Sunday in an event also promoted by the Navan/Avonmore Club did Vincent Gleeson also take the initiative to go on a solo break with approximately ten miles to the end, as did Aherne yesterday at the finish line in Batterstown.
