March Hare Road RaceKilcullen, Co. Kildare, March 1, 2003Lawless catches March HareBy Tommy Campbell James Lawless, son of the former President of the Irish Cycling Federation, Michael, got his season off to a flyer yesterday in Kilcullen, Co. Kildare. The event over 30 miles (5x6 mile laps) and sponsored also by the promoting Hillcrest Hire Kilcullen CC attracted a big turnout. Organiser, Liam Walker decided to be fair to all and handicapped the event that would give all and sundry a sporting chance. He allowed the limit group eight minutes on the scratch group, which included 15 of the seasoned campaigners. Initially the scratch group made good headway on reducing the arrears but on the last lap the remainder of the limit group found a new impetus and held their advantage to the finishing line where the young Lawless got the verdict over Paul McMahon with Stephen Engermann in third place. Whilst victory went to the Usher Irish Road Club, it was notable that the Bray Wheelers packed four into the top six placings with Rebecca O'Connell the first lady home occupying the sixth position.
