Gentleman’s Cycling Grand PrixBray, December 15, 2002Santa & Rudolph pay an early visit to BrayBy Tommy Campbell The appearance of Santa Claus and Rudolph (alias Herbie and Jasmine Monks) made the annual Gentleman’s Cycling Grand Prix a rather festive occasion yesterday in Bray. Bray Wheelers’ pairing of Ronan Carter and Richard Price usurped the competition by just being one second out of their nominated time for the 6-mile time trial on the Wicklow Road with a start and finish at the "Wheelers Club House" on the Dargle Road. Light drizzle was the only bone of contention for 38 pairings who were obliged to nominate their time for the test. In the end Ronan and Richard proved the most accurate, but no pairing since the event was first run all of 32 years ago have been spot on with their timing. With the demise of the Hamper Race in Carrick-on-Suir, there was an extra influx of competitors. The Usher Irish Road Club pair of David Peelo and Colm Bracken showed that the name of the game is racing by posting a time of 17 minutes and 7 seconds for a very technical course. It was evident that their calculations were way out as they went faster than the estimated time by a margin of 1 minute and 23 seconds. Even in the off-season, it looks as though 2003 will be a good one for the Usher boys. It was also interesting to see former Bray Wheeler, Mick O’Donnell teaming up with Derek Cunningham of the promoting club Bray Wheelers. The pairing were placed third, six seconds off their nominated time, but speculation is gaining momentum about his club allegiance next year. It would indeed be a bonus if O’Donnell were to wear the distinctive colours of purple and white again. Results, 6 mile TT1 R. Carter & R. Price (Bray Wheelers) 2 W. Parnell & A.
