Gastown Grand Prix

Vancouver, BC, July 18, 2002

McCormack and Davidge victorious in Vancouver

By Giana Roberge, team Saturn

Last night Saturn's Kim Davidge and Mark McCormack won the Gastown Grand Prix in Downtown Vancouver. The race, which has returned from a 9 year hiatus as one of the top criteriums in North America, picked up where it left off with an estimated 25,000 spectators in attendance. Held in the Gastown district of the city where Vancouver was first settled 160 years ago, the atmosphere was much like the Athens Twighlight Criterium and the Austin BMC, with the men taking the stage at 8:00 and racing well into the dark. The streets were packed with spectators hanging out in the street-side cafes and pubs cheering on the riders.

In the women's race, the field of 35 quickly shattered as there were nearly 20 primes in the 30 lap race, keeping the women sprinting at the line almost every lap. In the end there was a group of about 10 remaining for the final sprint which Saturn's Kim Davidge handily won with the assistance of a strong two lap lead out from her Saturn team-mate Kristy Scrymgeour. Scrymgeour ended up fourth.

The men's race was similar with about 30 primes handed out over a 50 lap race. The only significant break occurred during one of these sprints with Saturn riders Mark McCormack and Jay Sweet being joined by Svein Tuft (Prime Alliance), Scott Gogan (Norco), Andreas Hestler (Rocky Mountain), Ross Hooker (Atlas Cold), and Tony Critchlo (Escape Velocity). As this group threatened to lap the field, a chase group formed with. However, McCormack and Tuft jumped from the initial break, and working together lapped the field. In the final sprint it was McCormack with a strong finish for the win over Tuft.

The action continues tomorrow with the Hill Climb up 16% slopes in White Rock, BC.
