Brockton CriteriumStanley Park, Vancouver, British Columbia, June 15, 2002Big turnout for fast-growing Vancouver critB.C.'s best cyclists jockeyed for position in spectacular Stanley Park and a fortunate few took home the titles in one of the fastest growing bike races in B.C. More than 100 of BC's best cyclists competed in the 2nd annual Brockton Criterium in Stanley Park on Saturday, June 15. A total of three races were held on a 2.5 km circuit course featuring seven turns, the most technically challenging ones being the Horseshoe Turn and the Harbour Turn. At some points on the course, the elite racers (Category 1&2) reached speeds of up to 65 km/hr. The Brockton Criterium course is 2.7 km long, with the race starting and finishing at the Totems in Stanley Park. The Brockton Criterium is a race run on a points system. Every lap carries points towards a racers total, awarded to the first 4 riders across the line. The winner is the racer with the most points at the end of the race. The Brockton Criterium was one of the highlights of Bike Month, coordinated by Better Environmentally Sound Transportation (BEST). The race was followed by a recreational bicycle ride across the refurbished Lions Gate Bridge, featuring Councillor Jennifer Clarke and Vancouver Parks Board Commissioner Duncan Wilson and spectators and racers from the Criterium.
