Early sunday morning jaunt!

The first Sunday morning race had thirty one riders brave the early morning start for a very brisk 37.5km handicap.

The handicapper placed the riders in one of seven bunches from the scratch pair of Graham Rutter and Hardy Lohse to the limit riders of Emma Ringer, Jaclyn Kejda and Vince O’Dwyer who had eleven minutes start. At the end of the race all the finishers were within a three minute time frame, pretty good handicapping.

The ten minute bunch caught the limit bunch within the first half lap and then there was a group of eight trying to stay away from the chasing bunches. Peter Vesel was the main driving force in the group and with assistance from Keith Bennet, Lou Jonceski and Paul DuBois .

The five minute bunch were down to four riders by the top of Marshall Mount on the first lap. Pat Delahunty, Jason Johnson, Dean Marcinkowski and Joe Pereira all shared the efforts on the front evenly. Their effort was rewarded when the caught the seven minute bunch just before the end of the first lap.

Until Lionel Covington had a mechanical problem and dropped off the pace the three minute bunch were flying. They still sustained their effort with Ross Irvin, Austin Pitman, Adam Hotchkis and Garry Doughty all riding a solid race. With just over 10km of the race left they caught the combined five and seven minute group.

Rutter had dropped Lohse and he was having trouble trying to peg back the minute gap to the group of six riders off the block mark. Even though the one minute bunch had six riders chasing four off the three minute mark they were only gradually closing the gap.

The leading ten and eleven minute bunch had worked hard enough to be the winning bunch. In a drag race to the line Vesel held off Bennet from O’Dwyer, Ringer, Jonceski and DuBois.

Seventh place went to Irvin only 1:14 behind the winners. Neil Midgley won the bunch sprint of the block bunch, a further minute behind, to take out fastest time.

Next week’s race is a 27.5km scratch race with group 5 supplying the marshals.

The local contingent of riders have just returned from the World Masters Games held in Melbourne over the last week and a half.

In the very competitive 35-40 year age division Grant Law won a bronze medal on the velodrome in the kilometre time trial in a time of 1:10. Infact he rode nearly the same time in his heat and the ride off for bronze.

Another unbelievable effort was put in by Eric Doughty in the over 80 division with gold in the criterium and 2000m pursuit. Just when it looked like he might be able to make it a clean sweep he fell on the velodrome putting him out of the final two track races. After two days to recover he lined up for the road time trial where he collected gold again. The final road event was the road race where he won gold as well. With four gold from four events it was a great result, his wins were also very emphatic.

There were several other riders such as Mick Kejda and Mark Davis who also went down and competed and although they didn’t win a medal they rode very well and should be congratulated for their efforts.
