Maryborough CC

July 28, 2002

Hard racing, great camaraderie and perfect weather all combined to ensure the running of the annual Biggenden - Childers - Maryborough Invitation Cycle Classic was a huge success. C and D grade cyclists negotiated the 46km Childers to Biggenden road while A and B grade riders contested the 75km Biggenden to Maryborough course.

C grade riders were first away and it took little time for young David Keevers to go on the attack. More seasoned campaigners allowed the attacks but never let it get out of hand, shutting down every move. The field stayed together for the distance and places were decided in the final sprint. A move came about 400mts from the line, veteran riders Trevor Geysing and Paul Wroe edging out the younger riders. They were closely followed by a fast finishing Ben Notley. David Keevers earned the award for most aggressive riderâ of the day. Race time was 1hr 21mins.

Three D grade riders, Richard Fox Hugh Humphries and Cyril Culley were given a 10min start on the rest of the field and in a real surprise held out a strong field of vets to take the flag only seconds ahead of the main bunch. Race time was 1hr 31mins.

At 11am the A grade field headed off from Biggenden and with a mix of strong riders the money was up for grabs. Greg Lawler tried attacking the bunch on a few occasions hoping to split the field and start a breakaway but was not successful. With only 5km to go, the attacks started but everyone stayed together for the sprint to the line. Greg Lawler led out Clint Johnson but Bundaberg rider Phil Dunn was waiting to pounce and crossed ahead of Clint. Michael Wroe crossed third making sure Maryborough riders shared the spoils. Race time was 2hrs 10mins.

B grade riders headed off soon after the A grade bunch and stayed together for about 10km. Arthur Puie and Chris Ihle tested the bunch by putting 50mts into them. The bunch did not react preferring to leave them be and work to maintain the gap. Another 10km out and the gap had increased to 500mts as the main bunch could not stay organised. With 40km covered the bunch split again leaving Andrew McKenzie, John Kroning Ryan Dixon and Garry McLeish to try to chase down the riders ahead. Up ahead Chris Ihle had spent his pennies and left Arthur Puie to carry on by himself. Chris was gathered in by the four riders following, ending a gallant effort to stay away but there was no stopping Arthur, he crossed the line well ahead of Andrew McKenzie and John Kroning. Race time was 2hrs 14mins.
