Haedo fires home as O'Neill holds onto the overall

Toyota-United Pro's fast man JJ Haedo has taken another stage win in 2006 with victory in the final stage of the Redlands Classic, the 142km Sunset road race. After a crash in Saturday's criterium, Haedo showed class in the finishing circuits to hold off Brice Jones (Jelly Belly) and Ben Jacques-Maynes (KodakGallery/Sierra Nevada).
Going into the final stage, Health Net's Australian man-of-the-moment, Nathan O'Neill, held a slim advantage over Chris Baldwin, and the American came out with all guns blazing to try to take the overall win. "I've never seen Chris ride so aggressively," O'Neill said after securing the title. "This was his shot, and I think he knew he wasn't going to do it by sitting on my wheel," added the Commonwealth Games gold medallist.
The early task for Health Net was to prevent Baldwin from getting either of the two time bonuses out on the course; the first was the easiest to defend, as it came at the end of the second of two laps of the downtown circuit, when the peloton was still together. But the second came over the top of the first KoM on the Sunset Loop, where Baldwin attacked, but the move was covered. However, coming over the top of the climb the second time, Baldwin succeeded in initiating the break of the day.
"Chris was still riding a bit frisky and attacking on the second lap," O'Neill said. "So we decided to go ahead and give him a little leash." Health Net worked together to keep Baldwin in check, with Scott Moninger and Tim Johnson, plus Jeff Louder, Kirk O'Bee, Doug Ollerenshaw and Mike Sayers all working hard to get their man O'Neill to the line without losing too much time.

Health Ne'ts directeur sportif Jeff Corbett praised the team's efforts, saying, "We mainly wanted to ride a good tempo to keep the gap to the break down and within reach." At about the mid-point of the race, the break had gone out around 1:30, and O'Neill was getting a little nervous, "but I knew that it was a hard circuit, the kind that really takes a toll on a break as a race goes along. So we felt that eventually Chris would run out of gas. But if he had won it, then he would have deserved to," said O'Neill after the finish.
As Baldwin tired the break started to lag, and within two laps the gap had dropped to 30 seconds as attacks started coming out of what was left of the main bunch - not much more than 25 riders at that point - before the break was finished. Health Net's 'superman', Karl Menzies, took over and drove hard to get O'Neill to the finish before Haedo got near the front and did his thing, finishing off the race in style. With the entire crew behind him, O'Neill was extremely grateful for their part in his overall win, saying, "The whole team was absolutely phenomenal today," he said. "Tim would take a pull for a quarter of a lap and disappear and then claw his way back to the front for another. Then Sayers would do it. Jeff, Doug and Kirk as well. There's no way I would have won without them."
In the women's race, Amber Neben secured an overall win with victory on the final stage, beating TEAm Lipton's Kristin Armstrong, who had looked good for the Redlands title going into the final day.
