Joe Martin Stage Race - NEFayetteville, Arkansas, USA, May 12-14, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 4 - May 14: Criterium, 85/55 min+5 lapsFraser makes it a hat trick; Health Net sweepsBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor with additional reporting from Kirsten Robbins The spring sprinting campaign did not go as planned for Health Net-Maxxis' veteran sprinter Gord Fraser, and he knew it. "I was a little down earlier in the year because as a sprinter you like winning races," Fraser explained. However, sometimes it takes a little time for the ingredients to mix right, and this weekend in Arkansas Fraser found , winning the final criterium and the overall of the Joe Martin Stage Race. "The morale is getting very good obviously," Fraser said. "As you win the more it compounds!" And the winning becomes contagious throughout the team, with the Health Net-Maxxis squad controlling the race for Fraser. "Toyota and Jelly Belly were doing their best to get something up the road. Our guys responded to all of the immediate threats." The stage win was not even the focus today, with the overall jersey a more valuable goal. "For me it was more important to win the overall. I was pretty much surrounded in the final sprint, but I found a hole and jumped at the right time. It was a nice way to repay the guys." Taking all of the stages gives the team quite a confidence boost as Philly Week approaches. Traditionally, teams utilize this and the upcoming Tri-peaks races as preparation. "Now we can go to our little training camp here this week and to Tri-peaks a lot looser," said Fraser. "[My form] is close to being as good as it is going to get. I'm not in my top shape but things are going in the right direction. But more and more I am happy the way the team is riding." Seehafer rides away with criterium, Willock wins overallThe final stage of Joe Martin offered another grueling climb for the tired legs in the peloton. However, the aggression from the past two stages continued to carry over into today's race, with TEAm Lipton's Kori Seehafer making a decisive move to take the win. All teams fought hard in the criterium for one last attempt to change the general classification or make a stage win, with multiple attacks in the beginning of the race forcing the pace to stay high. As soon as the field lulled Seehafer and Alisha Lions (Webcor) rode off the front around the mid-point of the race. "I was sitting in fourth wheel on the narrow section of the descent and thought it was a good place to attack," said Seehafer. "I got a gap and Alisha bridged to me -- after the gap was established we worked well together. We were off for about the last thirty minutes." The duo worked well together holding off the field all the way to the end. "I attacked her at the base of the climb when I saw her shift in her small ring. I ended up making four seconds on her by the line," said Seehafer. Lions collected enough time at the end of the criterium to move into second place in the general classification only eight seconds behind teammate Erinne Willock. Colavita Cooking Light's Dotsie Bausch moved into third place, eleven seconds behind Willock. The field continued to fight to the end as Rio Grande rider Alison Powers slipped off of the front with two laps remaining for third place. With one lap to go Victory Brewing rider Rachel Heal attacked with Webcor's Erinne Willock on her wheel. "I initiated an attack and Erinne was on my wheel as I went," said Heal. "Once we got a gap we were passing a lapped group and that maybe helped increase the gap. Alisha was up the road and so Erinne may not have wanted to risk bridging to her." Coming into the finish Willock hung on for fourth place while Tina Pic (Colavita-Cooking Light) charged passed Heal at the line for fifth. TEAm Lipton missed out on two stage sprints before coming into this morning's criterium. "Our objective all week was for a stage win," said Seehafer. "It was frustrating with the confusion of results yesterday. My job is to lead out in a bunch sprint or to get into the breaks. I am happy with today's criterium."
