McCauley takes stage in tour of Southland

Gordon McCauley won stage four of the PowerNet Tour of Southland at Winton today after a 30km armchair ride behind two members of rival Southland Times team. McCauley made the break on a hill climb but when he was joined by Glen Mitchell and Marc Mackay he immediately adopted the role of policeman for his team mate and Tour leader Jeremy Yates.
The trio stayed clear and at the stage Finish at Winton they had a minute in hand over the bunch. McCauley made it a long sprint to beat MacKay and Mitchell. MacKay, who had won the morning stage was the big mover on general classification jumping from fifth to third overall.
Yates still holds his 51 seconds advantage over Scott Guyton but the USA-based Kiwi, Mitchell said that the race is far from over. "We're not even at the halfway mark yet. We came here to win the race and that's still our number one aim. Anything can happen yet," he told Cyclingnews.

Australian Joel Pearson, a major contender for the Sprint Ace prize had a bad afternoon. He received medical attention during the stage for a recurring heart murmur problem but he finished the stage and is confident of being back in business tomorrow. "It's a problem that pops up sometimes, but I'll be okay tomorrow" he said.
Another overseas visitor, American Josh Horowitz lost time after a crash but he also finished the stage and is currently in 38th place, 24 minutes behind the race leader.
Tomorrow the riders face the 130km stage from Lumsden and finishing with a climb up the scenic Crown mountain range.
