Wild, windy conditions combined with a stage finish on the notorious Bluff Hill turned the GC placings upside down on the second stage of the of the Powernet Tour of Southland this afternoon.

Fourteen riders rode away from the field after only five kilometres of the 80 kilometre stage and with riders from the leading teams in the break, the die was cast. Tour leader Gordon McCauley (Zookeepers Café) made the break, as did two of his team-mates, Yates brothers Jeremy and Matt. Also in the break were Scott Guyton (The Southland Times), Fraser McMaster (Meadow Fresh) and Australian Joel Pearson (Team MGZT).

However, the stage was really set alight at Bluff township four kilometres from the finish. First Aucklander Karl Murray (Calder Stewart) rode clear but was quickly chased down by Scott Guyton and Jeremy Yates. Yates and Guyton established their superiority and set sail for the top with McCauley in pursuit, but Lady Luck wasn't with the tour leader and a broken chain saw him walk to the summit, only to plummet down the rankings.

Yates showed the ability that made him a world junior road champion three years ago, riding away to beat previous tour winner Guyton by nearly a minute with Fraser McMaster third and Greg Henderson (Winton's Middle Pub) fourth.

Yates is not daunted by the prospect of defending the Tour lead for the rest of the week. "I sure hope I can," he said. "There's been a lot of thought put into the team and we've got some real horsepower there."

Stormy weather conditions are predicted for the next two days; tomorrow, the riders face a 112 kilometre stage in the morning from Invercargill to Tuatapere, followed by a 86 kilometre stage finishing at Winton in the afternoon.
