The fourth and final stage of the 2003 Pomona Valley Stage Race was contested in downtown San Dimas around a 1.6 mile, six-corner, L-shaped circuit. Though technically a circuit race due to the length of the course, it was held under the racing rules of America's staple racing format, the criterium.

In the women's race it was a case of "if at first you don't succeed, try again" when Megan Elliot (Saturn) took off solo only 10 minutes into the hour long race. A member of yesterday's long break which lasted over half of the race, Elliot was determined to try and stay away today. A lap later when three riders bridged across it was a case of deja vu for Elliot as she looked over her shoulder and exclaimed "not you again!" at the sight of another member of yesterday's break, Alison Dunlap (T-Mobile). Their companions for today were Karen Bockell (Rona-Esker) and Helen Kelly (TDS Womens Cycling Team).

Back in the field it was the familiar sight of yellow jersey holder Genevieve Jeanson policing the front with help from her Rona-Esker team while the quartet up ahead went to work and established a 25 second gap. Attempts were made to bridge across but all were shut down by Rona who had faith in Bockell's ability to finish it all off from a small group. Their trust was well placed as she narrowly beat former MTB World Champ Dunlap at the line.

Jeanson rolled across the line a few seconds later safely in the field to retain her overall lead and claim her first title in Pomona. With such talent and youth, it very likely will not be her last.

The men raced for 90 minutes and it was obvious from the outset that many wanted a break to succeed. Most notable breakaway protagonist were the riders of the Schroeder Iron team who were without a sprinter this week due to Miguel Meza racing elsewhere. Lap one saw two Schroeder riders taking a flyer with a Kissena rider, but before they could be even ID'd they were caught and a counter move of three went containing multiple time national track champ Mike Tillman (Schroeder Iron). Two more Schroeder riders bridged up shortly after and alarm bells rang through the pack. This only stayed away for a few laps, but the pattern continued as many riders tried to escape the Saturn led peloton to no avail.

Finally with 10 minutes remaining, the sprinters teams started to organize their lead-out trains. It was Saturn on the front keeping the pace high and not letting anything get away which gave way to Prime Alliance setting things up for Alex Candelario. Once again though, it was Gord Fraser (Health Net) stealing the show and climbing aboard the top step of the podium with a finishing sprint no one could touch.

Danielson finished in the pack and therefore kept his lead from stage 1 to take top honors in the general classification.

The final stage of the Pomona Valley Stage Race was a flat criterium held on the downtown, palm tree lined streets of San Dimas. With Genevieve Jeanson and Tom Danielson's leads both virtually touchable by their fellow competitors, the final stage was a battle for the stage win.

The women's race began 10 minutes late and got off to a brisk start. After a few laps, a four woman break formed with two of the same riders from yesterday's break, Saturn's Megan Elliott and Alison Dunlap (T-Mobile). Helen Kelly and Karen Bockell (Rona) were also there. With her Leader back in the pack, Bockell was hesitant to work but Dunlap and Elliott were motivated and worked the break gradually building the gap to 25 seconds.

The attacks from behind brought the time split down within range but without any organization at the front, the foursome was never negated and in the final meters it was Bockell coming over Dunlap for the win. Saturn's Elliott was fourth.

In the men's race a very early break containing no one in the top 40 in the overall lasted a few laps before the surging peloton brought them back to the fold. Attack after attack saw many breaks go up the road, but with many teams intent on a field sprint, especially Gord Fraser's Health Net Team, each attack was reabsorbed. The Saturn Team dominated the front of the peloton, riding a hard tempo to minimize any possible escapes, and thus protect Danielson's lead.

As the ninety minutes wound down, it was clear that a field sprint would determine the stage winner, and the Prime Alliance and health Net teams moved to the front to wind it up for the lead-out. Saturn continued to press hard as well, keeping Danielson up front and safe from potential crashes.

In the final 300 meters it was Alex Candelario giving his best shot at the win for Prime Alliance, but Fraser was too fast and came by to win his third consecutive stage of the four day race. Danielson finished with the same time and won his first tour in the US for the Saturn Team. His Saturn teammate, Chris Horner finished up second with Tim Johnson and Phil Zajicek also finishing in the top ten. Prime Alliance also finished up with a strong showing in the overall with four of their riders finishing in the top ten.
