Fernandez claims second stage
Edo still leads
Spaniard David Fernandez (Colchon Relax-Fuenlabrada) has triumphed in the second stage of the GP Rota do Marques, disputed over 171 kilometres between Pombal and Marinha Grande. Just like yesterday, today's stage ended in a mass sprint, with Fernandez able to beat Alexei Markov (Lokomotiv) and race leader Angel Edo (Milaneza). Edo managed to win enough bonus seconds to fend off Candido Barbosa (LA Pecol) for the overall classification.
The second stage began at 11:00am from Pombal's public library with all 98 riders present. The attacks started almost straight away with riders from the ASC-Vila Do Conde team particularly active. No-one succeeded for very long, as the bunch rolled along at an average of 45 km/h. The first intermediate sprint at Coimbra (km 38) saw Candido Barbosa take a valuable three seconds time bonus, moving himself to within one second of the overall lead.
Things warmed up in the next hour as a group containing Rafael Mila (ASC-Vila Do Conde), Nelio Simao (Porta Da Ravessa), Pedro Andrade (L.A. Pecol), Oscar Romero (Pepolim) and Hernani Broco (Portuguese U23 team) escaped after 60 kilometres, gaining a maximum lead of 28 seconds before being swallowed up by the vigilant peloton before the next sprint at Figueira da Foz (km 84). This was again taken by Barbosa, with Rafael Mila surviving to take second in front of Angel Edo. Barbosa effectively had the overall lead now, subject to the time bonuses at the finish.
The only mountain sprint of the day was a Cat. 2 climb at Serra Da Boa (km 90), won by Joaquim Sampaio (Boavista) from Nuno Alves and Hugo Sabido (Barbot Torrie). 15 kilometres later, a breakaway finally went clear, with Jose Antonio Jimenez (Porta Da Ravessa), Sergio Ribeiro (ASC-Vila Do Conde) and Pedro Lopes (L.A. Pecol) riding away from the peloton one by one, to join together at the 120 kilometre mark with a 2'30 lead on the peloton.
Their escape was monitored by the Milaneza team, who rode on the front to prevent the trio from getting more than two minutes advantage. With 25 km to go, Milaneza stepped on the gas and caught the break with 10 km left. From then on it was a battle among various teams to control the sprint, with Colchon-Relax, CCC-Polsat and Milaneza all getting involved. In the end, Colchon-Relax provided David Fernandez with a perfect leadout so that he could claim the stage win in front of Markov and Edo.
Tomorrow's third stage from Marinha Grande to Oeiras should present few problems for Angel Edo's leadership, containing just three Cat. 3 climbs en route. Sunday will decide the race with a 12.3 kilometre time trial in Oeiras.
