GC reversal as Simoni takes the lead

With Gilberto Simoni (Saeco), Stefano Garzelli (Caldirola) and Tadej Valjavec (Fassa Bortolo) filling the top three placings, the podium of stage 2 of the Giro del Trentino looked rather similar to stage 1. The major difference today was that Gilberto Simoni won the stage, and Garzelli and Valjavec finished a handful of seconds down, giving Simoni the outright lead in his hometown race.
"I knew I'd worked well and this win pays me back for all the tough training I've done," said Simoni after winning his first race in almost a year. "Winning near home is always nice too. Now I want to win the whole race, even if the most important thing is to get ready for the Giro d'Italia as well as I can. With this win I'd say we're right on track."
The second stage of the Giro del Trentino was even tougher than yesterday's, being run over 166 km between Moena and Ronzone and featuring two Cat. 2 climbs and the Cat. 1 Passo Mendola, coming after 74 km. After an aggressive start, a group containing Garzelli, Mariano Piccoli, Marco Milesi, Julio Perez Cuapio, Oscar Pozzi, Giuseppe Muraglia, Hernan Dario Munoz and Marzio Bruseghin succeeded in gaining 20 seconds at the top the Passo San Lugano (km 33) before descending into the valley and tacking the Passo Mendola. The Saeco team was attentive, and brought Garzelli and Perez Cuapio back by the foot of the descent, leaving Bruseghin, Piccoli, Milesi, Pozzi, Muraglia, Munoz in front, only being joined by Mercatone Uno's Ivan Ravaioli.
At the 50 km mark, Piccoli's group had gained a lead of 24" on a second chase group containing Fuentes, Loda, Zucconi, Miorin, Talabardon, Zinetti and Mizourov, with the peloton following a little way behind. Ravaioli took the sprint in Caldaro (km 56) and the seven leaders began the climb of Passo Mendola with 50" on Fuentes and a 3'28 lead on the peloton. At the top of the climb, Bruseghin, Muraglia and Munoz and their group crested in that order, with 2'18 on Loda, Ravaioli and Miorin and 3'55 on the Saeco led peloton.
On the next climb of Forcella di Brez (km 94), it was Bruseghin again leading the group over, with only Munoz, Fuentes and Mizourov staying with him. The remnants of the break were in between this four man leading group and the Simoni-Garzelli peloton at 3'00, although the leaders did regroup on the descent to form a group of eight again.
On the penultimate climb of Passo della Predaia (km 140), Simoni decided it was time to go. He attacked with his teammate Sabaliauskas, with Garzelli, Valjavec, Perez Cuapio, Muraglia and Bertagnolli joining him. After catching and dropping the remaining leaders on this climb, Simoni crossed the summit first in front of Garzelli and Valjavec, with the rest of the group following behind. They were caught by Figueras and Barbero on the descent to form a group of nine in front, ready for the final climb up to Ronzone.
With eight kilometres to go, Barbero attacked with Saeco's Bertagnolli in hot pursuit. In the final part of the stage, it was Bertagnolli, Simoni, Garzelli and Valjavec in the lead, with the rest of the break trying to close the gap. Simoni made his final acceleration with 500m to go, and broke the group apart, winning by nine seconds to Garzelli and 16 seconds to Valjavec, thus he was able to take the leader's jersey.
Tomorrow's third stage from Fondo to Levico Terme is 165 kilometres, containing one climb, the Cat. 2 Gabart (km 96.1).
