The flying Zimbabwean is back

The cycling world thought that Tim Jones had disappeared since he didn't race at all last year despite being on the roster of the Mercury cycling team in the US in 2002. But the climber from Zimbabwe is back: he's the winner of stage 3 in the Settimana Lombarda, the hardest one with the gruelling climb of the Maddalena, 7 km long at 13 to 14%.
That's where everything happened of course. Five riders went away under the impetus of former Mapei rider Graziano Gasparre, now riding for De Nardi-Colpack. He was joined by the race leader Julio Alberto Perez Cuapio (Panaria) and his teammate Paolo Lanfranchi, neo-pro Giuseppe Muraglia (Formaggi Pinzolo Fiavè) and Jones (Amore e Vita). Then Jones and Perez Cuapio climbed too fast for their companions, who got caught by Steve Zampieri (Vini Caldirola), José Castelblanco (Colombia-Selle Italia) and Jef Peeters (Vlaanderen).
At the top of the climb, Perez was first and there were less than 20km to go. The two men couldn't be seen any more by the chasers. They sprinted for the stage win and it was so close that the judges waited for the photo-finish to determine the winner. It was Tim Jones, back in business for the first time since he won the Trofeo dell'Etna in March two years ago, riding for Formaggi Trentini.

The 28 year old Zimbabwean from Buti in Tuscany was able to smile again. "Yesterday I was really pissed off," he said. "Because my plan wasn't to win today's stage in Roncadelle but the hilly time trial." This is known for being Jones's speciality.
"I want to thank Ivano Fanini," added Jones. "He's the person who made me turn pro [in 1997 with Amore e Vita], now he has also made me return pro." Anti-doping leader Fanini also fired him when he failed a hematocrit test three years ago, but this is apparently forgiven.
Perez Cuapio keeps the lead and looks like able to continue that way until the finish in Bergamo on Monday, because he has a very strong Panaria team behind him.
