Let's go and taste Ravaioli, a new Italian product

Marco Pantani's MercatoneUno-Scanavino GS2 team has scored its first win this year but not in the Vuelta a Aragon where the Pirate is continuing his latest comeback. It happened at the Settimana Lombarda with another rider coming from Romagna. He's a brand new rider and his name is Ivan Ravaioli. The twenty two year old was a promising U-23 last year with nine wins.
"This is my first year pro and my first pro win, I can't say I expected it but I've built it," he said. He started far from the finish, going away after just 30km into stage 1 with ten other riders. They profited from the inaugural laps around Alzate Brianza to break clear. Usually, race organisers put final laps for the spectacle. Here, they've done the opposite: 4 times 17km before going for a big loop. It was actually something very tecnical that cyclists were welcome to use tactically. It helped the race to begin quite early.

The 11 men away were Leonardo Zanotti (De Nardi-Colpack), Gianpaolo Cheula (Vini Caldirola), Cristiano Frattini and Alessandro Pozzi (Tenax), Ivan Ravaioli (MercatoneUno), Humberto Mesa and Leonardo Scarselli (Selle Italia), Steve Kleynen and Nico Simens (Vlaanderen), Dean Podgornyk (Perutnina) and Sandro Guttinger (Macandina). The hot favourite Panaria team had missed the break. Paolo Lanfranchi tried to bridge the gap by himself but didn't make it.
A group of 33 riders was formed behind, including all the main teams, but they never agreed to pace together and never came across. Nine of the 11 escapees stayed away. "I made the difference on the final hill just before the finish," said Ravaioli. He did however have a bit scare after his win. Going to the medical control, Ravaioli was so excited that he jumped from his team car and got his foot stuck under the back wheel!
He should be OK for the hilly time trial scheduled for Friday on the Roncola. Lanfranchi, Julio Perez Cuapio and some others have planned their revenge on this climb, which is well known by the cyclists around Bergamo.
