Stage 4 - May 3: Downtown Silver City Criterium, 43.2 miles
Torres & Teutenberg take town centre show

Florencio Ramos Torres (Tecos) and Ina Teutenberg (Saturn Cycling) ran away with the fourth stage of the Tour of the Gila under hot and windy conditions Saturday afternoon. On a 1.1 mile course covering 35 city blocks in downtown Silver City, riders were taken on a tour past the library, county courthouse, and a western-style strip of local shops, restaurants, and galleries.
This was not a simple, flat course. Running a square around downtown, the course's long start/finish straightaway sloped up to the judges stand. The second straight climbed as well, lading to the third straight, on which riders had to climb up over a hump of road gaining seventy feet of altitude in a couple of hundred yards before flying down the fourth straight before turning back onto the finish straight. Riders peaked at over forty miles an hour coming into the final turn and after all the racing was over, the General Classification leaders remained safely in place tonight.
Men: Tecos plays tactics, All-Stars play safe

Team tactics determined the flow of the men's 40-lap race. HealthNet's Mike Sayers and Gord Fraser sit second and fourth in the GC. With Fraser their known sprinter, HealthNet has a stake in keeping pressure on the rest of the field to allow him a chance to show his stuff at the finish. Team Tecos, with Ubaldo Estepas third in GC, sent riders off the front with every break for the second day in a row. Trek/VW All-Stars, looking a little fatigued after a tough defense of the leader's jersey yesterday, needed only to keep Drew Miller, first in GC, out of harm and close to Sayers, Fraser, and Estepa.
Sayers once again provided the aggression for the race, launching and covering almost every attempted attack on the field. Fraser and other HealthNet teammates, such as Todd Harriot, kept the pressure on as well.
Nothing would stick though, until the final few laps. A split in the field with three laps to go found eight riders in front of the main pack, in sight but with a slight lead. Since none of the eight was a serious GC threat, the field seemed confused and unwilling to chase them down to set up lead-outs for their sprint stars. This was the opportunity team Tecos had been looking for.

With three laps left, Torres pushed off the front and built a small gap from the newly formed breakaway. He slipped his hands into the drops and bore down. With two laps to go, he had four seconds of road between him and the group. Behind the break, the front of the main field began to re-form but they had been complacent too long and lost their opportunity to bridge. With the crowd cheering and clapping, driving his valiant attempt along, Torres added two more seconds to his lead as he came past the start/finish into the final lap.
When he swung around turn four the last time, his win was assured. He had time to tuck in his yellow-orange jersey and raise his hands in triumph as the cycling fans and local supporters of Silver City witnessed a dramatic win by the solo breakaway rider.

It was a day of individual efforts for the women's 25-lap race. Criteriums usually result in sprint finishes, but with Genevieve Jeanson in the field, you're on the edge of your seat not knowing what exactly could happen. Jeanson could just as soon ride off the front and solo her way to another stage win as the field could stay together and fight for a chance to battle it out at the last.
But Teutenberg had her own ideas today. Aggressive pack racing began immediately, with one or two riders going off the front in the first two laps only to be swallowed up before they could put any air behind them. The field strung out along Bullard Street but, save for shedding a few tired and fatigued women, or riders who unfortunately found themselves off the back at the wrong time, stayed together.
Until a third lap push by Teutenberg that could only be matched by Melissa Holt (Rona Esker) and Sue Haywood (T-Mobile). Jeanson either missed the move or was sitting in the pack waiting to see what developed. Probably the latter because after the break grew to about 20 seconds and seemed fated to hold, she bridged the gap by herself over the course of one lap.

And then there were four. Quickly, the break began to work together and the lead built. With seven laps to go, it had gained a 1:17 advantage. GC second placed Manon Jutras (Saturn Cycling) and third Katrina Grove (T-Mobile) were together in the main pack. With no real incentive to chase down either the seemingly unbeatable Jeanson or their two teammates who had a chance for stage victory, Jutras and Grove kept their teams together and left the break alone. Much to the frustration of unsupported riders like Lynn Gaggiolli (VeloBella) and Kelli Emmett (Hillenbrand Racing) who both tried to launch the field into action with attacks.
With three laps to go and a lead of over two minutes, the only drama left for the women's race would be who of the four in the break would take the win. Would Jeanson suddenly bump off the front and solo in to attempt to sweep the Tour of the Gila? Or would we see the dramatics of a small bunch sprint? Teutenberg again had the answer. At the final turn she surged and rocketed the finish straight, crossing the line with her hands up and two frustrated and weary followers. Jeanson had let them go and came across 14 seconds later, secure in the fact that she had put safely tacked another two minutes on to her GC lead.
Bring on the Gila Monster
Tomorrow's day of racing promises to be exciting. The Gila Monster Road Race is a 106-mile odyssey that will trek the men up and over all the steepest and most challenging terrain the Silver City area has to offer. Climbs include a 1000-foot gain up the road to Pinos Altos, the site of shorts-changing descents in Friday's stage, as well as an extended tour up the road to New Mexico's famous and historic Cliff Dwellings. All told, the men climb three, 1,500 foot, six-mile long roads over peaks.

With the entire top 20 in the GC within 5:19 of race leader Miller, the Tour of the Gila really could be won by anybody. Expect HealthNet to do everything possible to shell Miller by the last climb and hand Mike Sayers a chance for his week long campaign of aggression to pay off. And don't count out Tecos. Their team tactics have been rubbing HealthNet the wrong way all week but they seem to have an agenda that, maybe because of the differences between racing in South and North America or the language barrier, no one seems to quite understand. They have the talent to make a push for an exciting attempt to win this race, and seem to have a well thought out plan on how to accomplish just that.
For the women, barring any unusually creative circumstance, their 69 mile version of the Gila Monster will not end up a case of who will win, but by how much will Jeanson win. She was 11:42 up on Kim Bruckner after the final day last year. With a 11:12 lead in the GC heading into Sunday this year, it will be interesting to see how much more time Jeanson can add up over Jutras.
