Moletta wins in another long breakaway
Mercatone Uno's Andrea Moletta has won the sixth stage of the Peace Race, crossing the line solo in front of breakaway companions Eric Baumann (Wiesenhof) and René Haselbacher (Gerolsteiner). Moletta attacked his 12 man group with seven km to go in the 146 km stage to take the win by nine seconds. Race leader Steffen Wesemann (Telekom) finished in the main bunch, and kept the yellow jersey.
Today's stage from Krosno Odrzanskie to Frankfurt was another flat one, and it was also short at just 146 kilometres. A number of attacks at the start saw several groups get away, but it wasn't until kilometre 60 that a break finally got clear. It contained 12 riders representing 11 teams, none of whom were a real threat to the lead of Wesemann, and so it was allowed to escape.
The break consisted of Andrea Moletta and Joseba Albizu (Mercatone Uno), Eric Baumann (Wiesenhof), René Haselbacher (Gerolsteiner), Alessandro Cortinovis (Lampre), Jimmi Madsen (Team CSC), Kazimierz Stafiej (Mroz), Lukasz Podolski (CCC-Polsat), Karl Pauwels (Palmans-Collstrop), Phil Zajicek (Saturn), Michal Precechtel (eD'system-ZVVZ) and Stephan Schreck (Team Telekom), the latter being the best placed on GC at 9'55. The peloton allowed it to gain 3'20 before it stepped on the gas and maintained the gap, but there was no real desire to chase the break down.
Race leader Wesemann's only scare came with 15 km to go, when there was a crash in the peloton and he was involved. However within five kilometres he was back in the bunch, and his yellow jersey was safe for another day.
In front, Andrea Moletta took advantage of having a teammate in the break to attack with seven kilometres to go, and only Eric Baumann (Wiesenhof) reacted. Baumann however missed the wheel of Moletta, and spent the final kilometres chasing in vain, eventually finishing second behind the Mercatone Uno man. The 24 year old Italian thus scored his first professional win in his first professional season, with Baumann and Haselbacher taking second and third in that order.
