49th Four Days of Dunkirk - 2.1

A 160 kilometre long two man breakaway has given Jean Delatour's Frederic Finot the first leader's jersey in the Four Days of Dunkirk. Finot beat Ag2r's Stéphane Berges in the sprint for the line in Roost-Warendin, after the pair had been away since kilometre 30. Tom Steels (Landbouwkrediet) won the bunch sprint for third, but was over two minutes behind the leaders.
With the final Tour de France selection to be made on May 19, the French teams are seeing the Four Days of Dunkirk and the Tour de Picardie as their last chances to impress the Tour organisers. Jean Delatour is not one of the favoured teams for selection, having won just four races this season. Thus it was no surprise when one of them took off after 30 kilometres of the 190 kilometre stage today, in pursuit of a rider from rival French team Ag2r. The latter is more certain of selection after Laurent Brochard and Jaan Kirsipuu's early season performances.
Finot and Berges made good their escape, and the peloton let them get as much as seven minutes lead as they weren't considered serious threats. However when they reached the pavé sections at Orchies (km 160), they realised that the could win the stage. The peloton could only close to within two minutes at the finish, as Finot took a comfortable win in front of Berges, and took the pink leader's jersey.
Tomorrow's second stage is another long, flat one, measuring 200.9 km between Sin-le-Noble and Bapaume. It has fewer difficulties than today's stage, and Finot should be able to defend his lead.
