Solano Bicycle Classic - NEUSA, March 27-30, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Kim Bruckner diary Stage 4 - March 30: Daily Republic Circuit Race, 82/60 milesTeutenberg outsprints break survivors, Horner flees to win men'sBy George Khristoforov Ina Teutenberg won the final stage of the Solano Bicycle Classic, sprinting ahead of Catherine Marsal of the Canadian Federation Team and Victory Brewing/Amoroso's Sandy Espeseth at the beginning of a long and temperate day. The three riders were all that remained of a breakaway that started with 20 riders on lap two of the designated nine. "We attacked on the middle of the second lap," said Teutenberg. "I attacked on the second to last hill, and then Cat and Sandy followed me. Sandy tried to jump at the end, but we were able to close the gap again." The breakaway went unchased by either Saturn or T-Mobile, as neither felt especially threatened by the riders up the road. In fact, the only person back in the field who had any stake in moving up was Velo Bella's Lynne Gaggioli. "I was disappointed when the break went today," she said. "Because I was going for the win. It doesn't matter if you consistently place. You have to learn how to win. That's what counts. It's winning." When the final laps arose and a slight threat to T-Mobile's Team GC arose, the Pink Flames sat down and pedaled, bringing down the gap from a scary three minutes to a more comfortable two. "At the end we were chasing not necessarily to catch the break," said T-Mobile's Kim Bruckner. "But because we wanted to keep team GC. We had to keep the break under two minutes, for Team GC, and for the overall morale of the team." Marsal, Espeseth and Teutenberg, all strong sprinters, ground out a solid tempo once they left the circuit for the trip to the finish line. "Everybody took their turns," said Teutenberg. "Because the field was closing and we couldn't just stop pedaling. I ended up being on the front." The German Saturn rider began her sprint from 300 meters out and easily took it to the line. Espeseth was just ahead of Marsal for second. The course was 5.6 miles around an undulating and well-paved residential neighborhood in Fairfield. Skies were sunny, warm and positively cerulean over this Air Force town, and before the women arrived a parade of erratically driven cars with enormous American flags went honking through the streets. Men: Lieswyn tries to throw in a spannerIn the men's race it was Chris Horner peeling away from a field to take the day and sew up his overall GC position. Greg Henderson of 7Up-Maxxis charged past HealthNet's Gord Fraser for the field sprint. "It's a long sprint and he took off," said Henderson of Fraser. "I sort of just waited and waited and waited and I just punched past him in the last 50 meters or so." The race was together until the fifth lap, when a rather unspectacular break began moving away from the field. Marty Nothstein of the Navigators and Jelly-Belly's Brian Forbes were the meanest looking sprinters in the bunch, but the presence of 7Up-Maxxis' John Lieswyn and his proximity to Forbes' teammate Ben Brooks on GC made total dedication to the break a non-starter. "I was just sitting on," said Forbes. "(Team Manager) Danny (Van Haute) was telling me not to work too much, so I just pulled through so they wouldn't get upset with me. I was waiting for the end, hoping we might get away. Lieswyn had the most to gain, so we didn't want it to get over two minutes." Saturn sniffed at the break, which included their Mark McCormack, but politely refused to bark. In fact the men in yellow and red went promptly to the front of the main field and shut things down. "We weren't chasing," said Chris Horner. "We were all on the front but we weren't trying to bring it back. We had Mark in the group, so we wanted to give him a shot at winning the stage." In response, Ofoto-Lombardi's Erik Saunders and Saul Raisen put in a hard effort and jumped the 1:56 second gap in just under two laps. When they got to the front, they found Lieswyn and HealthNet's Mike Sayers failing to rally any support for a continued push. "It's a little disappointing because we put in a big effort to get there," said Saunders. "And then we kind of had to jump start things. In the end I think guys were just a little too tired. It was a good move and we salvaged the day for the team. We didn't look like chumps missing the break, which is the most important thing." Lieswyn had his reasons for wanting to stay away. A jump to fourth on GC was possible, as was heroic denial of a Saturn victory. "Basically I wanted to see anybody but Saturn win today," he said. "They have won pretty much everything so far, so that was my goal." While denial was not to be, the break was successful in eventually motivating Jelly Belly to come to the front, rejoining the field in one big happy peloton after the riders had exited the circuit and begun the journey home. Saturn set themselves up for the final criterium course rehash, and the rest of the teams put their best sprinters to the front. Horner was preparing to lead out teammate Ivan Dominguez in the second to last turn when Jelly Belly's Chris Fisher clipped a pedal and spooked the skittish Cuban sprint star. Gord Fraser was lurking right behind. "Dominguez hit the brakes and that left Gord Fraser to either have to have Dominguez on his wheel or hope that someone else comes out and he can hop on his wheel and win the sprint that way," said Horner. The race was over, Horner and Saturn were indeed victorious. Now they all pack up and take one day off to travel south in time for Redlands. For many of these riders, the next two weeks will be one continuous race, stretching from the smoggy valleys of Southern California to the sandy loam of Monterey's seacoast at Sea Otter. After that they drive clear across the country to Georgia for the new and exciting race there. For some who are already fit and ready, these races will be the surest wins of the season. For those who are just coming together, they will be superb training for the remainder of the year. For still others, a lot of sweat and frustration. "We kind of got creamed in the GC," said John Lieswyn after the end of today's race. "But we're pleased. We're coming along. By the time we get to Georgia we'll either be dead or we'll be flying."
