Ljungskog snags a birthday present

World Champion Susanne Ljungskog bagged her first victory of the season on her 27th birthday, on March 16. Trofeo Citta Rosignano is contested a few kilometers south of Pisa, where Ljungskog has set up base for 2003. The wind made the 96 kilometere race harder than expected and only 15 riders were left in the front group for the uphill sprint. Ljungskog started out the sprint early and was able to keep Nicole Cooke, Rochelle Gilmore and Zinaida Stahurskaia behind her.

With the day's work done, Susanne planned to celebrate her birthday at a coastal pizzeria, with a non-formaggi pizza. Next week will be spent training on the roads around Nice and San Remo to prepare for the Primavera Rosa next Saturday, the second race in the women's world cup.
