Pomona Valley Stage Race - NESan Dimas, California, USA, March 6-9, 2003Main Page Results Previous stage Next stage Stage 2 - March 7: KB Home circuit raceFraser and Jeanson win field sprintsDanielson maintains leadBy Rob Karman After yesterday's decidedly upward battle, today was a day for the sprinters to shine and neither pro field disappointed. After a full slate of amateur category races, the Pro women's field set off at 1:25pm for their 90 minute event around the Sierra Lakes Housing development of race title sponsor KB Homes. The almost dead flat 2.5 mile loop gently curved along the northern border of the housing development's golf course before doubling back and taking in a long, 1 mile straightaway. This stretch of the course would prove to be pivotal as its length kept any break from escaping the line of sight of the pack, thus helping to ensure the break's doom. Only a few laps into the women's race and the break of the day formed with Katarina Grove of Team T-Mobile and Laura Van Gilder of Saturn. They would only get up to 16 seconds on the pack as the Rona/Esker team of GC leader Genevieve Jeanson set tempo on the front. With the race winding down, the blue and yellow clad Rona/Esker girls brought it all back together and Jeanson proved that she can do it all by taking the sprint handily. In the men's race, Prime Alliance was aggressive from the gun with former U23 World TT champ Danny Pate launching an attack on lap one with two others in tow. That moved was quickly absorbed and countered by Svein Tuft (Prime Alliance), Mike Tillman (Schroeder Iron) and Tyler Farrar (Jelly Belly). This would prove to be the main action of the day as they stayed off the front for the next hour and a half, picking up all of the sprint points on offer along the way. Back in the field it was the Saturn team of GC leader and climbing superstar Tom Danielson doing the pace setting for the first 75 minutes of the race. With Danielson's lead not threatened by the break, it was up to the other teams to bring things back together and first year team Health Net took the challenge and brought the break back in order to set up their fast man, Canadian Gord Fraser. With 5 laps to go it looked like their plans were all for naught as Prime Alliance took control and drove the pace in hopes of delivering Jonas Carney to the line, but as the field came into view it was all Gord, pumping his fists like always. Team Saturn report by Giana Roberge The second stage of the Pomona Valley Stage was held on a windy 2.3 mile circuit near Riverside, CA. With only 40 seconds of time bonuses in the men's and women's race up for grabs, the overall could only be changed by virtue of a break. Race Leader Tom Danielson's Saturn team was well prepared for the task at hand after defending the same rider's Yellow Leader's jersey just weeks ago in Malaysia. And, albeit a small team of four riders, Genevieve Jeanson's Rona Team is also quite experienced at protecting the young Canadian's lead after she has established it, so change in either race would be a formidable task for anyone up to challenging the leaders. The women's race began quietly with the group compact for the initial time bonus and point sprint. Nicole Freedman claimed the first sprint, and managed to string out what had been a quiet field for the initial 30 minutes of the 90 minute race. After the sprint, a two woman break of Saturn's Laura Van Gilder and Katrina Grove (T-Mobile) cleared the field. Working together the two opened a gap, but with a wide open course, and Rona chasing steadily behind, the largest time split was 25 seconds. At the one hour mark, the second time bonus sprint brought the field together. Shortly thereafter, Van Gilder crashed into one of the pylons on the road, but after a trip to the hospital was left with road rash, a well-earned broken helmet and only a slight bump on her head. In the final laps, T-Mobile tried to escape, to no avail, and in the last mile, it was Jeanson wedging herself away from a charging field and just barely staying clear of a surging Nicole Freedman in second. Saturn's Lyne Bessette was third. In the men's race a three man break was established early in the race with Schroeder Iron's Mike Tillman, Svein Tuft of Prime Alliance and Jelly Belly's Tyler Farrar. The Saturn team patrolled the front, allowing the gap to grow to 55 seconds, steadily bringing it back every time it increased, comfortably maintaining the cushion protecting Danielson's lead. In the sprints, Farrar took the first over Tuft, with Tillman over Farrar in the second sprint. Shortly after the second sprint at the one hour - twenty minute mark the threesome had a mere twenty seconds. The Health Net Team, sensing the possibility of a field sprint for their sprinter Gord Fraser, moved in for the kill, and quickly brought the break back. From there it was the Prime Alliance and Health Net Teams bringing the attacks back, ensuring a field sprint. In the final lap the strong lead-outs from both teams created a split in the field catching Saturn's Danielson in the second half of the split. As Fraser and his Health Net Team wound it up for the final sprint, Danielson chased to gain back the seconds he lost, finishing an estimated ten seconds behind the sprinters. In the end it was Fraser winning handily over Prime Alliance's John Peters. The overall remained unchanged for both the men's and women's races with Danielson and Jeanson dressed in Yellow for tomorrow's road race. PhotographyImages by Rob Karman/www.roadbikephotos.com/
