Cascade Brewery - Lounge Bar Northern Tour - NEAustralia, March 8-10, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Stage 6 - March 10: Poatina, 39.0kmAmsterdam Bound With Victory In Hand For Menzies
From Rod Morris in Longford For the last three years, Launceston's Karl Menzies has shown - with results on the bike - he is the best road cyclist in Tasmania.Yesterday (March 10), the former triathlete, added another impressive string to his bow, by winning the prestigious Cascade Launceston 3-Day Tour. After declaring his hand in the opening two stages, Menzies spent the final 200 km of the tour, defending his hold on the leader's jersey. "I enjoyed the opening stages, but then it became hard work countering every attack from other riders," Menzies said. On April 4, Menzies heads to Europe where he will base himself in Amsterdam and an all-out assault on the lucrative road tour in the Northern hemisphere. Six stages over three days and more than 300 km of tough terrain around the Longford, Cressy and Poatina district, saw Menzies eventually win the tour by the relatively comfortable margin of 23-points. "I can tell you it was anything but comfortable," Menzies said. "That was hard work out there, particularly the fifth stage - the race director must have had in for us. The fifth stage was an arduous climb from Longford to Poatina and while the distance may have only been 40 km, the gradient tested all concerned. Race director - Paul Turner, slyly admitted "My name is probably mud after this stage." Menzies confirmed his status in this stage, even if he could only manage fifth place. "I'm probably carrying about 30 kg more than any of these riders, so I'm just glad to finish," he said. Stage 5 was won by Victorian David Salton, just ahead of his Warragul based teammate Joel Pearson, who ultimately finished second to Menzies in GC honours. Completing the mainland Australian trifecta for the stage was South Aussie, Dane Cheers. Non-Tasmanian stage finishes continued in the afternoon when Jono Clarke claimed his first win of the weekend. Salton also claimed King of the Mountain honours while Menzies was crowned the Sprint King. Rising Tasmanian star Matt Goss won Category 2 ahead of the luckless Kharne Hammersley, while veteran campaigner Laurie Venn scored third after a consistent weekend of riding. Category 3 was a tight affair all weekend with former Austral Wheel winner Matthew Atkins eventually scoring an emotional victory over Josh Wilson and Wes Sulzberger. In Cat. 4, former football boundary umpire Kaidan Homan won from Tasmanian female stars Belinda Goss and Louise Yaxley, while in Cat. 5, Paul Wilson scored a comfortable win over Darren Cook and Paul Guest. In junior racing, the age group winners were John Rayner (J1), Tom Robinson (J2) and David Lyons (J3). The Tasmanian road racing calendar continues next weekend with the annual Lilydale Business Classic on March 15. PhotosImages by Shane Goss/licoricegallery.com/
