Figueras opens his account

Italian rider Giuliano Figueras (Panaria) won his first race of 2003 in the GP Chiasso, which was also the opening Swiss race of the season. Figueras beat Mirko Celestino (Saeco) and Giuseppe Palumbo (De Nardi-Colpack) in a 21 rider bunch sprint.

The final stages of the 166 km race saw Sylvain Chavanel (Boulangere) break away for some 25 km alone, however he was caught by the leaders with 12 km to go. Figueras was led out by teammate Luca Mazzanti, enabling to win his first race since coming back from his suspension. The Italian also won the GP Chiasso in 2000.
