Be Active Cycle Instead Criterium Series - NEPerth, Australia, January 2-5, 2002Main Page Results Previous Race Next Race Race 3 - January 4: Subiaco (Hay Street), 7.30pm-8.30pmPerth series dominated by NSW talentBy Renae Woodhams NSW champion, Mark Renshaw has won the final of the Be Active Cycle Instead Perth Criterium Series held in Subiaco tonight, leading a thrilling sprint finish ahead of Olympic Gold medallist, Brett Aitken and local rider Daniel Mackey. This follows Renshaw's victory in the second race of the Series and cements his standing as one of the best up and coming riders in Australia. As anticipated the final circuit lived up to its expectations with the tight corners and narrow course proving difficult for many riders. As a result, a third of the field finished and the race was characterised by a number of early crashes. The riders who were not forced to retire from the course following the crashes, were stretched over the entire circuit until an aggressive break by Steve Williams dragged four riders with him leaving the chasers to regroup. Renshaw, Mackey, and Graham Brown followed Williams' lead and were soon joined by Aitken with the five man group setting an impressive 11 second lead over the main peleton. The group set the pace for a further 10 minutes with the lead changing regularly. A decisive break came with 20 minutes to go as World Champion, Peter Dawson, showed his pursuit skills by jumping from the main bunch and catching the leaders. It took him fifteen minutes to bridge the gap and join the five man lead where he maintained his position within the group. In the last few minutes the main peleton completed their race and left the circuit leaving the leading six riders to battle it out. On the final turn, Renshaw out-sprinted Brown and Aitken, but an appeal saw Brown bumped to fifth place opening third position for local rider Mackey. Dawson finished strongly for fourth place followed by Williams in sixth. Renshaw's win in the Be Active Cycle Instead Perth Criterium Series caps off an impressive year, which saw him smash the Commonwealth Games and World Records in the team pursuit and win the World Track Championships in Denmark. "This has been a fantastic series and I was hoping to win this final," Renshaw said. Following the series final of the Be Active Cycle Instead Perth Criterium Series, the overall green jersey winner is Graham Brown and the West Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS), featuring Daniel Mackey, Peter Dawson, Ric Steele and Benjamin Miles, took out the team prize. The Australian Criterium Championships will be held in Grand Boulevard, Joondalup tomorrow from 7.30pm with pre race entertainment featuring the Perth Jazz Orchestra and Mark Underwood from 5pm. The Be Active Cycle Instead Criterium Series is a "Best on Earth in Perth" event. For more information please visit www.perthcriterium.com.au. PhotosImages by Tom Kroyer
