Bettini wins his first Tour of Med

Quick Step-Davitamon's Paolo Bettini has landed his first win of the season, taking the overall classification of the Tour Méditerranéen. The five day race finished with a 42 km team time trial today from Gemenos to Marseilles, in which Quick Step finished third behind Fassa Bortolo and Rabobank, which was enough to secure the jersey for Bettini.
Personally, I won my Tour Méditerranéen after yesterday's finish, at the end of the 'in line' stages. This win is therefore entirely a result of the team that supported me splendidly during the five days of racing. I am satisfied about this result. My condition is good and I hope also to do a good race at Trofeo Laigueglia on Tuesday."

Despite bringing a relatively underpowered team to the Tour of Med, Fassa Bortolo produced an excellent ride to take the stage, five seconds ahead of Bram de Groot's Rabobank squad. Last year's TTT champions averaged 49.10 km/h over the tough, hilly course and could at least be satisfied with the stage win after none of them made the crucial break on stage 1. And through his team's strong performance, Bram de Groot moved himself up to fourth overall, but couldn't get past Laurent Brochard (Ag2r, 2nd) or Sylvain Chavanel (Boulangère, 3rd) after their respective teams also finished in the top five.
