Ukrainian Yuriy Krivtsov wins at home... in France!

Another bunch sprint was expected in the Circuit de la Sarthe et des Pays de la Loire, but fortunately, there are some fabulous attackers from Eastern Europe who didn't accept this fate. "We broke clear with 90 km to go," Russian Alexander Kolobnev (Domina Vacanze) explained. "It was a very fast rhythm, which isn't too good for me, I like climbs better. We never had much of an advantage, so we could never slow down."
With him, there was the exceptional rouleur Yuriy Krivtsov from Jean Delatour. The pair rode very well together, then Krivtsov attacked with 7km to go and Kolobnev chased hard. "The sprint wasn't a question of who was the fastest but he was more fresh than I," Kolobnev regretted.
"We never spoke, we only rode flat out," Krivtsov commented. He was delighted when he crossed the line in front of many people who know him well and encouraged him a lot. Krivtsov is from Nikolaiev in the Ukraine, but he's been living in Nantes - just 80km away from Angers - for four years now. He was - and still is - a member of the Nantes 44 Cyclisme team, one of the 20 clubs competing in the French division 1 for amateurs. That's where Yuriy grew up as a young cyclist and he still lives at the club's apartments.
For the 2001 season, he was meant to join the Bonjour team, which is also a local organisation from the western part of France, but the management didn't respect the letter they of employment they signed with him after one of his impressive rides, the Chrono des Herbiers in 1999.
Krivtsov is an true time triallist. He came 3rd in the GP des Nations last year for his first season as a professional with Jean Delatour. But he didn't want to wait for the afternoon time trial in the Circuit de la Sarthe. "Any victory is good to get, especially for a rider like me who wants to take part in the Tour de France this year," Krivtsov said.
