Tour of the Gila - NEUSA, April 30-May 4, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - May 2: Inner Loop Road Race, 61 milesHealthNet puts the pressure on; Jeanson still unbeatableby Stephen W. Medcroft Gord Fraser (HealthNet) fired the afterburners at the finish of the third stage of the Tour of the Gila to win the sprint ahead of an elite group of 30 or so survivors of the day's grueling climbing. Genevieve Jeanson (Rona Esker) proved her dominance once again, as if it were in question, firing her own rockets on a controlled burn that, over the 76 mile stage, put her 5 1/2 minutes ahead of eight of the top racers competing on U.S. soil today. Today's Inner Loop Road Race was tough and challenging. Starting at Fort Bayard Medical facility, a collection of stand-alone structures located about eight miles from downtown Silver City, the neutral rollout lasted two miles at best before the race hit steep and severe rural highway rollers to the first of two sprint line bonuses. Then the climbing began, taking racers up and over the 7,000 foot continental divide three times before the warm, sunny day ended. The combination small-ring climbs and alpine-style descents kept tensions and tactics thrilling and shattered all the fields racing today. Women: Jeanson escapes againRona's plan was to attack the group aggressively and early and set Jeanson off on a solo training ride. At the six mile mark, "they [Rona] put two girls in front of Genevieve to lead out and two girls behind her to sweep," said Manon Jutras (Saturn Cycling) of the way the race unfolded. "I was able to stick on her wheel when she took off." "Manon stayed with me for a little while," Jeanson said. "I worked hard to drop her. And finally did. After that, I just kept going." "Until mile 12," Jutras added, marking the spot where she fell off Jeanson's wheel. "Today I just didn't have the legs [to stay with her]." Despite a GC lead of more than four minutes, Rona's team strategy never called for Jeanson to just sit in the pack today and settle for the gaps she built in the past two days. "It's easier to sit in the pack but you need to take an opportunity sometimes to make the race," she said of the opportunity to work. "I like to go hard when it's time to go hard. And there are not many races where I'm able to break away like that. This course is perfect for me [as a test of strength and fitness]." After working hard at the beginning of the race to establish her lead, Jeanson says she settled into her own pace, watching her heart rate monitor closely to make sure she stayed within her thresholds, and time trailed her way to the finish line uncontested. At the final feed zone, a mere 15 miles from the end, Jeanson had a 10 1/2 minute lead over the rest of the field. Back down the road, racers were getting itchy for their own test of fitness on the day. Jutras had since allowed herself to drift back into the main pack. "With 16 miles to go I felt I could give [an attack] a try and see what happens. I wanted to get my workout just like Genevieve so I broke away. A group [of about 8 women] caught me." The break worked to pull back some of the time Jeanson had gained over the previous 50 miles. Then, as with the pro men's race, the race for second came down to a sprint finish. At the line, Lynn Gaggiolli (VeloBella) nosed Karen Bockel (Rona Esker) for third place today. When asked about the benefits of a race for second, Jutras was positive about her team's experience at the Tour of the Gila and its role in their preparation for future key international and domestic races. "We're a new team and just learning how to work together," she said. So although they choose not to exercise their right to futility and attack to defeat Jeanson, Jutras says they're getting a lot out of their week. "Jessica [Phillips] is just coming back from an injury so she's working her fitness. I'm working on my climbing and endurance. Amy [Moore] is coming back as well." The teamwork is paying off and Jutras feels that Saturn Cycling's women's team will be strong for the upcoming Tour de l'Aude. "We'll have our team mate Lynn [Bessette] who'll defend the jersey." After today's stage, Jeanson, Jutras, and Grove sit safely in the podium spots in GC. The only drama left before Jeanson packs another winner's jersey into her suitcase and moves on to the next stop on her tour of domination, is Sunday's Gila Monster Road Race, which will send riders, along the 106-mile course, back up some of today's descents. Men: Miller takes the heatThe pro men's race is being fiercely contested and may come down to an epic battle in the Gila Monster. As soon as the field was led onto highway 180, small groups of riders pressed off the front, attempting to establish any advantage over the field. Despite a presence of other riders in the breaks, there were only three teams that had a stake in the success of any move today. Trek/VW All-Stars' mission was, of course, to protect the leader's jersey. Since the stage was populated with challenging climbs and white-knuckle downhills, it would be on Drew Miller himself to be sure and not let anyone important get off the front. The Tecos team took an aggressive approach to the race, trying to move their highest-placed rider, Ubaldo Mesa Estapa (third in GC) up the rankings while at the same time weakening Miller in preparation for what will probably be a significant attack in Sunday's Gila Monster Road Race. But the front of today's race was controlled once again by Team HealthNet. On the first long rolling sections of highway, Gord Fraser moved into a small breakaway group to claim part of the first sprint bonus. Once the pack descended the Pinos-Altos peak, dropping 1,000 feet on hair-pin turns in less than three road miles, Mike Sayers took charge. Along the valley bottoms between climbs, Sayers drove a small break away off the front, at one time stretching the lead to 33 seconds. If there was going to be a day where HealthNet could put Miller in trouble, today was it. "I knew I'd burn some matches," Sayers said, "but I was like, screw it, I'm going." Sayers' pressure was enough to shatter the pro men's field. When it eventually came back together on the last long climb into the final feed zone, only 35 or so riders remained together at the front. No matter the pressure though, safely in sight of the front at all times, Drew Miller sat and watched. With six miles to go, Tecos sent two riders off but into the final turn the front group came together and, as Miller, Sayers and Fraser all predicted yesterday, a group of 20 or more set themselves up for a sprint finish. As the line approached, Fraser flipped the switch and sailed across, two hands in the air, a good bike-length ahead of the group. The bottom lineWhen racing was over, the leaders in the GC remain Miller and Jeanson. The men's race is still open, only a 34 second gap remains between Miller and Sayers. In the women's GC, Jeanson now has a commanding 9:36 on Jutras. Jutras seems safe for Sunday's award ceremony with Grove at 12:10 behind. Interestingly, both riders have won the Tour of the Gila twice each before. Miller, won the race as a younger pro in '91 and again in '94. Jeanson has taken the last two years back to back. Should they both win a third, it will be a story of renewal for Miller, a re-acquaintance with top pro success. Jeanson's win would represent the only time a woman has won three consecutive Tours of the Gila in the race's 17 year history. Tomorrow's downtown criterium race should be a showcase for the sprinters. Expect Team Healthnet to dominate the race and give Gord Fraser a chance to once again fire the cannons at the end. Saturn Cycling will be working on their lead-out skills to place Ina-Yoko Teutenberg in position to test her sprinting form. PhotographyImages by Beth Seliga/www.3catsphoto.com
