Tour of the Gila - NEUSA, April 30-May 4, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - May 1: Silver City to Mogollon Pass Road Race, 92 milesYet another for dominant Miller and JeansonBy Stephen W. Medcroft Drew Miller and Genevieve Jeanson won the second stage of the Tour of the Gila left Silver City this morning under cycling-perfect conditions. Temperatures were cool but would warm to the mid 70's by race end. There was no discernible wind and the clouds that did roll in were so harmless and so high in the sky as to be innocuous. Underneath that calm sky though, fierce battles raged. Today's point-to-point race headed east out of town towards the road up to Mogollon. Racers found themselves alternating on the rollers between soft-pedal down-sloping sections of highway and grinds up short, steep rolling climbs. Elevation dropped from 5,900 feet in the city to 4,500 feet in Cliff (at the 30 mile mark). During a brief circuit off the main highway through the small communities of Cliff and Gila racers were met at the roadside by the complete population of Cliff Schools including the marching band. Two intermediary sprint bonuses were up for grabs as well, promising breakaway groups and hard riding for the teams with GC representation. The course was marching the packs on to the base of the road up to Mogollon. Once the right hand turn was made, the course turned upward immediately. The climb would travel 10 miles and go from 4,700 feet to 6,800 feet. Surely it would prove to be the crux of the race. Women: Jeanson in controlCorky Kutz, Genevieve Jeanson's (Rona Esker) training partner, said as the women's group rolled out onto the course that Rona's tactic would be to keep the race together, cover all the breaks, and place Jeanson in position at the bottom of the hill. This would be no secret to the rest of the field. Once on the mountain, Jeanson would try to ride away and put time on her rivals. Rona executed the plan perfectly. Jeanson kept the women's race completely under control and waited until the final climb to put a stamp on the day and extend her lead in the General Classification to almost four minutes over Manon Jutras (Saturn Cycling). The top three women were strung out along the final climb like 747's on the approach to an international airport -- lined up perfectly but spaced safely apart. One after the other, the rolled around the final corner and pushed up past the thin white line painted in front of race officials. Jeanson, who has won pretty much everything she's attempted this year and is the dominant force in North American women's road racing, added 2:26 to her lead. Jutras, who has key wins of her own and top placements otherwise, secured her spot by finishing 1:27 ahead of Katrina Grove (T-Mobile). Today's finish re-sorted the GC to bump Leah Goldstien (Victory Brewing) out of the way for Katrina Grove to move into third. Men: HealthNet AttacksThe men's race held much more drama. Gord Fraser (Team HealthNet), GC leader in the morning, knew that this would be a race to the climb but wasn't sure he saw the value in having his team protect his possession of the leader's jersey. "Why spend so much energy on something you may lose?" he said, anticipating that the strong Mexican climbers of The Tecos team would make a successful push up to the final summit. Tecos was equally optimistic. When team riders were asked who the favorites for today were, Ubaldo Mesa Estepa and Domingo Gonzales were singled out. Tecos Merciado is a university team from Guadalahara Mexico. They've had a stage winner in the Tour of the Gila before and, with promising results at early season visits to Redlands and Sea Otter, they feel they have racers who can compete against top US pros. Mike Sayers of HealthNet seemed to be buzzing at the start, itching to get the day underway. Despite his cool and professional words as he pulled off his leg-warmers at the team truck, it was obvious he had intentions for the day. "The great thing about this race is that it forces you to ride hard. We have an obligation to defend the jersey." Then the two-mile neutral start ended and racing began on New Mexico's rural Highway 180. Immediate pushes off the front of the pack allowed a quick 13-man break to get free. Sayers was nestled safely in the break along with two teammates. A couple of Tecos riders had matched the move as well. The break stayed away, although it was controlled to two minutes, for almost seventy miles. Sitting in the pack was Drew Miller and his Trek/VW All-Stars team. "Our objective today was to try and get the jersey," he said. "We knew we'd have limited opportunity to do it." Miller's team worked at the front to keep the break in sight. "Halfway through, we realized Sayers was up there and chances were, he was sitting in." Little did they know, Sayers had actually been riding aggressively the entire race. He dominated the two sprints for bonuses and seemed to be controlling the efforts of the break. Then after a feed zone at 9.5 miles to go, Colby Pearce, a young rider with the Denver-based 5280/Subaru team, attacked the break. Sayers immediately matched. Florencio Ramos Torres (Tecos) followed. The rest of the break sat and waited for the climb. Miller's team upped the tempo to reach the climb within striking distance. Sayers attacked again and soon lost his two break-mates. Back in the pack, Fraser was attempting to control the pace. Miller's team pulled from the front. "The [Trek/VW] team did a great job of keeping [Sayers] close," Miller said. "When the climb started, I could see him, but he was only a speck." Miller settled into the kind of climbing rhythm that led him to the top of the podium in Bisbee and chased Sayers down, catching him with a mile to the summit. Miller says he could see that Sayers was reaching his limit. "You have to have so much respect for HealthNet," he said. "They put us in such a tough position. We had to work incredibly hard today." Miller rode on to finish 33 seconds ahead. When Fraser's time was calculated and Sayers' sprint and finish bonus tallied, Miller had just enough advantage to slip on the Tour of the Gila leader's jersey. What's nextThe 3rd stage of the Tour of the Gila, Fort Bayerd Inner Loop Road Race, covers 76 miles for both men and women. Racers will get no rest for their climbing legs either -- the loop gains significant altitude (six miles at a six percent grade average, three miles at five percent, seven miles at three percent) for something like 3,000 feet of total climbing through the day.
