Belohvosciks by a whisker

Gianluca Bortolami's legs did not quite hold out for the last 13.7 kilometres of the KBC Driedaagse van De Panne, a testing, windy race against the clock around the streets of De Panne. Starting last, he fought with his bike for 17'38" to concede 48.39" to stage winner Raivis Belohvosciks (Marlux), who only needed 48" to catch Bortolami on GC. That was just enough for the Latvian to claim the overall as well as the stage winner, leaving an exhausted and disappointed Bortolami in second place. Belohvosciks' win in the Driedaagse was a real coup for the Marlux team, directed by Jef Braeckevelt and Andrei Tchmil, as success and exposure is hard to come by in the shadow of the bigger Belgian teams Quick.Step-Davitamon, Lotto-Domo, Landbouwkrediet-Colnago, and Palmans-Collstrop.
"I tried to win the time trial, I didn't know I also would win the GC," said a surprised Belohvosciks to TV1 after being told he was the winner. "I thought about maybe the first five places because I have good condition but I didn't know that I was so strong. I saw in Harelbeke [4th] that I'd already come in front and had good legs. I hope it's not the biggest win of my career. I hope in the future there will be something else bigger like the World Championships Time Trial."
Belohvosciks also had good words for his directors, Jef Braeckevelt and Andrei Tchmil, "Jef does everything. All day, he stays with me for training and everything else. He lives only for the riders and cycling. Tchmil knows all these roads and I do also. He says good things like 'don't lose the time' and 'make the selection'."
To which Braeckevelt added, "I knew that he could do it. In the beginning of the season he was sick, but he came back and made unbelievable progress in the past weeks."

The last stage was held in dry, sunny but very windy conditions. Eleven riders chose not to start, including Quick.Step's Luca Paolini, who had a sore shoulder and did not want to compromise his chances for Sunday. The early pace was set by FDJeux.com's Brad Wiggins, who blitzed around the course in 17'07" to eventually finish fifth. As the better placed riders started to come in, Fassa Bortolo's Fabian Cancellara shaved 2 seconds off Wiggins' time to become the new rider in the hot seat.
Cancellara's time didn't last long however, as Raivis Belohvosciks, who was chasing the stage win, came home in a time of 16'49.81, an average speed of nearly 49 km/h and the only rider to break the 17 minute barrier. With the top 10 GC riders still to follow him, it was thought that Belohvosciks had probably done enough for a podium spot, but few believed that Bortolami would lose 49 seconds over 13.7 km.
As the final 10 riders finished their time trials, Olaf Pollack (Gerolsteiner) was the only one to get close to Belohvosciks in 17'04, but that wasn't going to be enough to win the race, and the Latvian suddenly found himself right in contention for the overall. Bortolami started his ride, but he was losing time at every check - 11 seconds at 3.5 km, 29 seconds at 10 km, and ultimately 49 seconds on the line after 13.7 kilometres of painful effort. Bortolami knew it wasn't good enough even before he was told of the official result, and conceded defeat, hoping that this week's efforts won't have hurt him too much for Sunday.

- Nico Mattan (Cofidis) finished the race in the same position as his stage placing - 6th.
- The dapper looking Rabobank boys reconnoitre the time trial course before heading out for the real thing.
- Gianluca Bortolami (Sidermec-Saunier Duval) knew his effort wasn't good enough even before he was told of the official result, hoping his effort this week won't have hurt him too much for Sunday's RVV.
- Bert Roesems (Palmans-Collstrop) rode strongly for a spot in the top 15.
- Big, deep, controlled breaths are the only way to get through a TT without blowing to bits.
- Dario Pieri (Team Saeco) also did a fine ride to end the KBC Driedaagse van De Panne-Koksijde in 16th overall.
- Points leader Fabio Baldato (Alessio), although not a time trial specialist, still managed a credible 18th on the stage.
- Hendrik Van Dyck (Palmans-Collstrop) appeared to be suffering, and his stage placing confirmed that.
- Jan Verstraeten (Vlaanderen-T Interim) liked the TT about as much as Hendrik Van Dyck, which wasn't very much at all.
- Classics specialist Jo Planckaert (Cofidis) has come out of the KBC Driedaagse van De Panne-Koksijde in good condition, just in time for the Ronde Van Vlaanderen.
- Johan Verstrepen (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago) is clearly not at ease in the time trial, adopting a much less aerodynamic position than the top time triallists.
- Young belgian rider Leif Hoste (Lotto-Domo) had a good ride to finish the stage in 21st place.
- The lanky legs of Ludo Dierckxsens (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago) enabled him to finish the race in 15th overall.
- Like Nico Mattan, Marc Wauters (Rabobank) also finished the race in the same position as his stage placing - in 10th place.
- Marco Serpellini (Lampre) would much prefer a long, undulating road stage than a 13.7 kilometre time trial.
- Peter Van Petegem (Lotto-Domo) confirmed his status as a contender for the weekend's Ronde by finishing the KBC Driedaagse van De Panne-Koksijde in 3rd overall.
- Young Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne winner, 22nd year old Roy Sentjens (Rabobank), was slightly amiss this week, but will still managed a respectable 26th place overall.
- Salvatore Commesso (Team Saeco) appears to be coming back into form after a lacklustre 2002, finishing the KBC Driedaagse van De Panne-Koksijde in 17th place.
- Stijn Devolder (Vlaanderen-T Interim) is among the growing legion of new cycling talent to emerge from Belgium in recent years.
- Kai Hundertmarck (Telekom) looks like he's cruising, but there's a price to be paid for that - Hundertmarck finished last on the stage.
- Now that's better! Hundertmarck's teammate Rolf Aldag (Telekom) is definitely giving it a bit more oomph.
- Previous champion of Italy, Daniele Nardello (Telekom), is coming into form, finishing the KBC Driedaagse van De Panne-Koksijde in 20th place.
- Jan Schaffrath (Telekom) is a new addition to German powerhouse Team Telekom for 2003.
- Indefatigable Russian Viatcheslav Ekimov (US Postal presented by Berry Floor) had a great ride to finish fourth on the stage and fifth overall.
- Viatcheslav Ekimov (US Postal presented by Berry Floor), or "Eki" as he is affectionately known, going flat out along the testing, windy course around the streets of De Panne.
- Stefan Van Dijck (Lotto-Domo) rides close to the tramlines in the race against against the clock.
