Boogerd offensive fails in Battle of the Ardennes

It was D-Day today in the Ster Elektrotoer. In the Ardennes, with six mountain sprints and several uncategorized climbs, it had to be decided who would win the tour. The main competitors: Bart Voskamp (BankGiroLoterij) and Michael Boogerd (Rabobank). The outcome: Boogerd attacked continuously, Voskamp defended successfully. The stage win went surprisingly to Gerolsteiner test rider Sven Krauss. With just a flat stage to go, final victory for Voskamp seems certain.
Rabobank applied the Kelme tactics today: sending troops forward to build a bridgehead for the elite troupes. Immediately after the start Ronald Mutsaars (Rabobank) escaped, together with Stive Vermaut (Palmans-Colstrop). A bit later Rafael Nuritdinov (Colpack), Krzysztof Krzywy (Mroz), Oliver Penney (Van Hemert) and Uwe Hardter (Gerolsteiner), joined the two leaders. The peloton stayed calm, as the all of the riders in the breakaway were at least sixteen minutes behind in the general classification. Before the race hit the Ardennes the group already had built up a lead of five minutes. At the 60 kilometre point the gap was 6'40".
On the Côte du Rosier (91 km) Rabobank team director Adri van Houwelingen sent his next pawns forward: Bobbie Traksel and Marcel Duijn, but unsuccessfully. Duijn tried it again, this time with Magnus Bäckstedt (EDS-Fakta), the CSC-Tiscali duo Francisco Cerezo and Manuel Calvente, and Richard Slabbekoorn (Dutch National Team). The chasing quintet rapidly closed in on the six leaders.
At the 120-kilometre mark the margin had shrunk to 1'20". But BankGiroLoterij stayed alert, not allowing the chasing group more than half a minute, since it contained two dangerous riders. Cerezo was only 1'14" behind Voskamp in GC and Duijn 2'38". On the Mont Theux (124 km) the bunch rejoined the chasing group. On the climb Nuritdinov and Krzywy fell back, leaving four leaders up front.
Then the next Rabobank rider was sent forward. Cyclocrosser Sven Nys bridged the gap to the leaders and left them behind on the steep Côte de Sarpay (145 km). In the peloton Boogerd attacked. Voskamp cracked, but did not break. After the climb forty riders - with all favourites - came together, swallowing Nys very soon afterwards.
Just before the local circuit in Verviers-Chaineux (2x 6.6 km) the Rabo's tried it again, this time with Thorwald Veneberg and again Sven Nys. They got away with Michelle Colleoni (Colpack), Martin Rittsel (CSC-Tiscali), Claudio Astolfi (Acqua & Sapone), Sven Krauss (Gerolsteiner), Angelo van Melis (Dutch National Team) and Cees Jeurissen (Van Hemert). This group got the blessing from the BankGiroLoterij team. Leader Voskamp and teammate Bram Schmitz (second on GC) only had eyes for Boogerd.
On the final rolling slope Boogerd again could not make a difference, leaving all the work of his teammates for nothing. Surprisingly the queen's stage was taken in a sprint of three by a debutant, 19 year old German Sven Krauss. The youngster from Stuttgart is a test rider for the Gerolsteiner team, not even really a stagiaire.
"He is great talent, but I won't give him a contract", Gerolsteiner team director Rolf Gölz said. "He is too young. It is better for him to race with the amateurs for a couple of years."
In the top of the GC nothing really changed. The margins are still narrow, as Boogerd is only three seconds behind Voskamp. With the bonifications in the final stage things might still change. "But I don't expect it", Bart Voskamp said. "We should be able to control the stage."
