Michele Bartoli seems to be coming into form just in time not to be selected for the Italian World's team, after he was not included in the 14 man selection announced on Monday. The winner of the Giro dell'Emilia last Saturday today added the second stage of the Giro di Lucca to his palmares. Bartoli outsprinted none other than World Champion Oscar Freire to claim the win, after the two had caught Mercatone Uno's Massimiliano Mori with 100m to go. The race lead stayed in the hands of Mercatone Uno's Fabiano Fontanelli, whose team controlled the stage today.

Today's stage from Cappanori to Altopascio was the longest in the race, with four laps of a 30.7 km circuit followed by five laps of a 20.1 km circuit for a total of 225 km. The main difficulty was the climb of Montecarlo, a fairly steady 2.5 km climb that had to be repeated nine times.

After 10 km of racing, 22 riders attacked, including Giunti, Simeoni, Casagranda, Casarotto, Hvastija, Nikacevic, Carlstrom, Gronqvist, Laurent Jalabert, Miorin, Michele Bartoli, Basso, Petito, Cortinovis, Bettini, Freire, Mazzanti, Mori, De Groot, Gavazzi, Pepoli and Lunghi. As was the case yesterday, this turned out to be the winning break, although only five of the original 22 made it to the finish.

After two laps of the 30 km circuit, the distance between the break and the peloton was 2'51, with the chase being organised by the Domo-Farm Frites team. The speed after the first hour was a high 46.7 km/h, as those in front were obviously keen to stay away. However, the pace was starting to tell on the leaders, as Nikacevic, Casagranda, Casarotto, Hvastija and Gavazzi were all dropped and absorbed by the peloton, leaving 17 riders in front.

At the end of the third 30 km lap, the gap was up to 4'03, and the Formaggi Trentini team took over the chase from Domo. Their work was effective and reduced the gap to 1'47 with 100 km (5 x 20 km laps) to go. When the break hit the next climb of Montecarlo, Michele Bartoli (Fassa Bortolo) attacked in the company of Paolo Bettini and Oscar Freire (Mapei), with Massimiliano Mori (Mercatone Uno) and Thomas Gronqvist (Amore e Vita). The five extended their lead to a minute over the remainder of the break, with Massimo Giunti (Acqua e Sapone) and Devis Miorin (De Nardi) giving chase at the end of the lap. The peloton was still at 3'05 with 80 km to go, now led by Mercatone Uno.

On the second small lap, Massimo Donati (Tacconi) attacked from the peloton, succeeding in catching and dropping most of the breakaways in front of him. There were now seven in the lead, after Giunti and Miorin made the bridge to Bartoli, Bettini, Freire, Mori and Gronqvist, with Carlstrom on his own at 1'28, Donati at 2'38 and the peloton at 4'48.

On the third 20 km lap, Bettini was dropped from the front group on the Montecarlo climb. Freire then attacked at the top, succeeding in dropping Giunti while the rest regained his wheel on the descent. Donati had in the meantime caught Carlstrom, Bettini and Giunti, with the group also being joined by Luis Laverde (Formaggi Trentini).

The leading five worked well together on the fourth lap, having 1'50 advantage on Laverde and Donati, who were now chasing alone, and 5'19 to the peloton. On the final lap, Devis Miorin tried an attack on the Montecarlo climb, but he did not go far. Bartoli and co. caught him on the descent and it looked like being a five man sprint for the stage win. However with 3 km to go, an attack by Mori saw only Bartoli and Freire able to respond, with the pair catching the Mercatone Uno rider with just 100m to go. Bartoli was the better rider in the sprint, with Freire taking second in front of Mori. The peloton was led home 5'29 later by Mario Cipollini.
