Garzelli's first season win

With exactly a week to go before the start of the Giro d'Italia, Stefano Garzelli has claimed his first victory of the season, winning the 26th Grand Prix Industria e Artigianato of Larciano. The Mapei attacked with Guiliano Figueras (Panaria) and Francesco Casagrande (Fassa Bortolo) during the final climb of San. Baronto. The trio gained a good advantage over the chasing group and carefully took the descent to the finish, as the road surface was very slippery due to rain. Figueras was the first rider to start the sprint but Garzelli was hot on his wheels and passed him with 100 metres to go.

"This win has really boosted my spirits, especially as the Giro is just around the corner," said Garzelli. "I'd like to thank the rest of the team; today they rode the race for me. I'm in excellent condition and ready for the Giro."
