Tchmil finishes his career with a win
Andrei Tchmil (Lotto-Adecco) has won the third stage of the Tour of Belgium, from Mechelen to Bilzen, beating Alexandre Vinokourov in a two man sprint after the pair attacked in the closing kilometres. In doing so, Tchmil ended a 14 year career that has seen over 40 victories, including Paris-Roubaix, Milan-San Remo, Ronde Van Vlaanderen, Paris-Tours and the overall World Cup.
Despite his palmares, Tchmil could not end his career on his terms. He was unable to reach an agreement with the Lotto team for a contract for the rest of the reason. Tchmil asked for 40% of a full season's salary (125,000 euros), and although the Belgian National Lottery agreed in principal, the team's other two co-sponsors (Adecco and ABX) did not.
"I don't want to enter into any polemic," said Tchmil at a post-race press conference. "I've made my decision and that's it. I don't bear any grudges against anyone."
His win today was testament to a great career, and was achieved in typical Tchmil style. A breakaway of five riders (Glenn D'Hollander, Franck Pencolé, Salvatore Scamardella, Davy Commeyne and Steven De Neef) finished with D'Hollander going solo with 45 km to go. A late attack by Sebastien Matozza and Erwin Thijs caught D'Hollander, but they couldn't resist the peloton and it came together with 5 kilometres to go.
It looked as though it would end in a bunch sprint, but Alexandre Vinokourov had other ideas, accelerating past Matozza and Thijs in a bid for a solo win. Behind him, Guennadi Mikhailov sprinted off the front of the peloton with Tchmil glued to his wheel. They caught Vinokourov, and Mikhailov dropped off, leaving Vino and Tchmil in front with a small lead over the charging peloton.
It proved to be enough, and Tchmil had no problems outsprinting Vinokourov for the stage win, his last ever.
In the overall classification, Bart Voskamp (Bankgiroloterij) remained as the leader with Ludo Dierckxsens (Lampre) and Sylvain Chavanel (Bonjour) in second and third, with a tough stage from Bilzen to Marche-En-Famenne to finish the Tour of Belgium.
