Poland's Arkadius Wojtas was maybe too young when Gianluca Bortolami missed the yellow jersey in the 1994 Tour de France at the end of the stage from Cherbourg to Rennes coming back from England. The Italian world cup winner that year took time to celebrate his victory which allowed Sean Yates to take the leadership.
Wojtas, 24, a member of the Nürnberger German team for the second year after his debut as a pro with MROZ in 1998, took part in a breakaway that lasted for 180 kilometres and made the final move on the climb preceding the finish line.
He was so happy that he thanked God with the usual cross sign and lost more than one second doing it. The race officials had to calculate the new gaps between the best riders on GC. After half an hour, they were able to designate Jĝrgen Bo Petersen as the yellow jersey, still. The fakta rider can thank his team-mates and Wojtas' old partners from the MROZ squad for the long chase as the leaders advantage had gone up to 11 minutes.
"I'm not disappointed missing the yellow jersey," Wojtas commented. "I'm so happy to win a stage. I think I wouldn't have been able to defend the lead anyway."
It will be an interesting battle during the last two stages as five riders are now ranked within the same five seconds!
