Quaranta wins stage, Arvesen the race

Ivan Quaranta (Index-Alexia) was the fastest rider in the dramatic sprint finish on Nya Allén, while the winner of the general classification was Norwegian rider Kurt Asle Arvesen (EDS-Fakta).
The race was aggressive from the start and Arvesen's team EDS-Fakta had a tough job controlling the stage. The bunch split up at the first intermediate sprint when Rabobank started to ride hard to put Bram De Groot up for the first intermediate sprint. The race kept its high speed and Belgian rider Hendrik Van Dyck (Palmans-Collstrop) and Italian rider Diego Ferrari (Tacconi Sport) attacked with 150 kilometres to go and at most they had a gap of seven minutes.
The stage ended with five laps on a three kilometre course and the sprinters' teams took over the control of the race with 50 kilometres to go and neutralised all breakaways. They got the bunch sprint they wanted, and Ivan Quaranta was the fastest rider. He won the stage ahead of Steven De Jongh (Rabobank) and Rudi Kemna (Bankgiroloterij-Batavus)
There were no changes in the general classification, which meant that the Postgirot Open saw its third Norwegian overall winner. "This is the biggest race I have ever won. I want to thank all my teammates, whom I have great belief in. They have helped me a lot," said the 1997 U23 World Champion Arvesen.
Arvesen won the race 27 seconds ahead of Austrian rider René Haselbacher (Gerolsteiner) and 33 seconds ahead of Sweden’s new sensation, 22 year old Fredrik Modin (Team Mälarenergi). Fredrik Modin also won the U23 competition.

"I am satisfied and surprised over this result. My team started the race in a good way, and after that we just kept on. Today we put three guys up at the front and hoped we would be able to keep it together. I hope my results here means I will get a chance to ride with a division I or II team next year," said Modin after the finish. Another modest wish from the 52 kilo rider was that the white youth jersey should come in size XS.
Modin's sport director Patrick Serra was also very pleased with the efforts of the team. "This is one of the best things we have ever done as a team. We have had good results with a lot of riders, but this is the highest ranked race we are allowed to race, and the whole team has really given the fullest of themselves. Modin was third in the general classification, which I still cannot belive, and he also won the youth competition, and Fredrik Johansson won the combativity competition, and we also won the team classification," said Patrick Serra.
Steven De Jongh (Rabobank) was never threatened in the fight for the red points jersey, and Rik Reinerink (Bankgiroloterij-Batavus) could go home with the green sprinters jersey after five hectic days.
