Dutch rider Steve De Jongh (Rabobank) won the first road stage of the 21st edition of Postgirot Open, just ahead of Estonian champion Janek Tombak (Ag2r) and Jeremy Hunt (Big Mat Auber 93). This morning's winner Bert Roesems (Palmans-Collstrop) finished in the peloton and kept his lead.
The day started out with a 12.2 kilometre time trial, ridden on empty streets, because of Sweden's World Cup match with Argentina. None of the pre-race favourites could stand the pressure, and the day's best performance belonged to Bert Roesems (Palmans-Collstrop). The Belgian rider was 13 seconds ahead of Sebastian Lang (Gerolsteiner), and 20 seconds ahead of third placed Bart Voskamp (Bankgiroloterij).
Later in the afternoon, the 138 kilometre stage to Eskilstuna started under cloudy skies, with rain lashing the peloton before too long. Palmans-Collstrop controlled the race from the start and allowed no breakaways. With sprinters like Planckaert, Kirsipuu, De Jongh and Quaranta, few teams were interested in anything else than a big bunch sprint.
The weather caused some accidents, and the race ended almost before it had begun for Amore & Vita’s James Perry. Several more riders crashed in the heavy rain during the stage, and at one place the riders hit the street after being distracted by a company selling garden furniture, but none had to abandon because of the garden gnomes.
The stage ended with three street laps in Eskilstuna, partly paved. Due to the rain, the riders could not offer the speed festival that most spectators had been looking for. The peloton stayed together during the laps but when they entered the final sharp turn, Steven De Jongh took advantage of his good placing and came flying on to the final straight like a little arrow. Several riders chased, but De Jongh reached the line before Tombak and Hunt reached him.
Bert Roesems keeps his lead since this morning, and will start tomorrow's stage to Motala in the yellow jersey. Ivan Quaranta took both hot spot sprints of the day and was awarded the sprinter's jersey.
