Stage 5 - June 19: Porto Sant’Elpidio - Monte San Vito, 157 km

Australian team report

By Brian Stephens, AIS U23 manager

What a fantastic team I have here at the Baby Giro. Today Scott Davis took the leader's pink jersey in fine style on the climb to Monte San Vito. After being so close, so often this week, it was great to see it finally come off today.

The race started in Porto San Elpidio and then straight up the climb of Capodarco, which was traversed twice. A very lethargic bunch let small groups get well up the road before the major teams got organised to get the main group going. Everything broke loose on the finish circuit, which included 4 times up the climb of Monte San Vito, a very steep 1 km to the finish line.

Russian Dmitri Dementiev from Italfine won the stage but the interest was in the group including all the leaders on GC finishing fast behind the stage winners. After Gene Bates set the stage with an attack on the circuit, Scott attacked the leader with everything over the last 300 meters and managed to take the second he required to take the lead, then a few more.

Now we just have to see if we can hold it with the major mountain day tomorrow.
