Hundredths of seconds separate top riders in stage 1
Bessette Zajicek Take Top Honors, Bruckner and Wohlberg a very close second

The Fitchburg-Longsjo Classic kicked off in Fitchburg Massachusetts today with the Royal Plaza seven mile time trial. Held on a rolling out and back course, the first stage of four has typically seen vast time differences within the top podium spots. Not so today, however, with Canadian Lyne Bessette beating Saturn's Kimberly Bruckner by one second and Mercury's Phil Zajicek over Saturn's Eric Wohlberg by twenty-four hundredths of a second.
Third off, Bruckner came in with a 17:50 and held the lead until the last rider off, Bessette, who finished with a 17:49. Genevieve Jeanson, hot off her second place finish at the HP Women's Challenge finished third with a 18:33. Clara Hughes, preparing for the Commonwealth Games finished in fourth. Saturn's Catherine Marsal rounded out the top five.
Mercury's Chris Wherry set the fastest time early on in the men's race with a 16:32. It looked for a long time like it would be Wherry in yellow for tomorrow's circuit race, however, it was his Mercury teammate, Zajicek who finally unseated him with a 16:19:02. However, last man in would be the defending champion, Wohlberg. Flying up the hill, it looked very close, but in the end, Wohlberg finished with a 16:19:26. Navigator's Chris Baldwin showed that he is on excellent form after a spring crash sidelined him, placing fourth with a 16:34. Saturn's Victor Repinski rounded out the top five with a 16:39.
Team Mercury report
With Thunderstorms unleashing their wrath on the Pro 1-2 field at the 43rd annual Fitchburg/Longsjo Stage Race, some riders thought boats, not bikes, might be better suited to the course.
The weather improved as the day went on and those starting at the end had a small advantage over those who went early. Despite the bad weather, Mercury set the fast pace early (Wherry 16'32") and held on to take 4 of the first 7 spots in the stage 1 Time Trial.
Fresh off a strong showing at the Tour de Beauce, Mercury's Phil Zajicek won his first ever NRC race with a time of 16'19". It was Mercury's 61st win of the year.
