Zarra Gets the Jertsei Urdina!

Mikel Zarrabeitia (ONCE) is the new leader in the Euskal-Bizikleta after finishing second in the second stage behind Ukrainian Serguei Outschakov (CCC-Polsat). Zarrabeitia caught Outschakov and his breakaway companion Kyrylo Pospyeyev (Acqua e Sapone) with 8 km to go, after the pair had been away since the 100th kilometre.
One hundred and twenty seven riders set out in the second stage of the Euskal Bizikleta as it left Eibar, the birthplace of that wonderful device, the derailleur today. The green hills of Euskadi were again going to take their toll on the peloton and a few riders wanted to try and get an early break. At the 7 kilometre mark two escapes commenced and they soon came together to be one. But by the first climb of the day, the Alto de Garate, the break was all but neutralised and it was one of its survivors, Kelme's Zaballa who took the honours from the familiar face of Banesto's Santi Blanco.
At the base of the next climb, the Cat 3., Alto de Itziar, a group of 14, including Zarrabeitia (ONCE) and yesterday's protagonist, Kolobnev (Acqua e Sapone), had managed to create a 30 second window between themselves and the peloton. Kolobnev and Ferrara (Alessio) crowned the climb with a slender advantage. However with an active descent by the peloton the escapees were absorbed by the 47 kilometre mark.
The next landmark was when the race reached the Bay of Biscay at Ondarroa (57.7 kms). A group of twenty had managed to get away but behind the peloton was still active with many trying to escape its cover. On entering the picturesque seaside haven of Lekeitio (70 kms), where you can sit back on the beach or in a restaurant and watch the surf boats train for their races, Herrero (Relax), Piccoli (Lampre) and Miorin (Nardi) had a 20 second advantage. The three were still away as the race headed back away from the coast and arrived at the meta volante at Ipazter (76 kms).
Since Lekeitio the course had followed a route parallel to the coast but about a kilometre inland. The country is extremely hilly right up to the coast and within 5 kilometres the escapees were ascending the next categorised climb, Natxitua. At this point they had 36 seconds on a group of 20 pursuers and 1.20 on the peloton. Hererro took the points on the Cat. 3 climb from Piccoli but on the descent this break was again neutralised by the chasing peloton.
After passing through Laida, the race came within sight of one of the most beautiful combinations of sand, river and sea to be found anywhere (if you are in SE Australia - think Malacoota Inlet for example). Here the race headed inland following the course of the Oka river and towards the fabled town of Gernika. Between Laida and Gernika four riders got away: Pospyeyev (Acqua Sapone), Ferrio (Jazztel), Artetxe, (Euskaltel) and Outschakov (CCC). The Ukrainian pair, Pospyeyev and Outschakov soon left their companions behind and commenced what was to be the escape of the day.
They soon headed through Gernika and inland towards the main obstacle of the day, Urkiola. As they covered the hills between Gernika and Durango they had a gap of over 3.00 minutes. Behind the peloton was firmly under the control of ONCE as the yellow outfit readied themselves to set things up for the proximate Subida de Urkiola. Meanwhile the escapees widened their gap to 4.00 minutes at Muniketas (120.9 kms).
As they passed Durango city and through Manaria, the Ukrainians continued to work together. Both Lampre and Euskaltel tried to make their presence felt at the front of the pursuing peloton, but Beloki and his squad were always safely placed close to its head. As they came close to the first ramps Alessio also moved up to challenge ONCE's dominance. But this didn't work either. When the peloton reached the foot of Urkiola the Ukrainians had a gap of 4.06. Within its opening kilometre, Urkiola quickly reaches gradients of 13% and more and the Ukrainians seemed to be feeling the pinch as they wound their 25 tooth rear cogs. Behind, Commando Bizkaia, the local gang were all present and waiting.
Serrano and Zarrabeitia paced Beloki through the middle stages of the climb and around them formed a group of around 15 or so including representatives of Kelme, Euskaltel (Mayo, Laiseka, Artetxe and Etxebarria) and Banesto (Piepoli and Santi Blanco). The Ukrainians' advantage was 2.11 and falling and it seemed that with every second that went by, the pursuers closed another second of the gap.
Nevertheless, the pair managed to cross the top of the climb and past the church and the pub with the world's best bread and headed down to Oxtandio. A minute ten separated them from Fritsch (FDJ) and a minute twenty seven separated the chasers from Zarrabeitia and the remainder of the climbing group.
At Oxtandio the pair were still away with Mayo, Zarrabeitia and Fritsch in hot pursuit. At Oxtandio the course turns to the right and downhill for ten or eleven kilometres towards the town of Dima and Mayo's local patch. The descent is not steep, but it can be slippery and averages around a 5% gradient. Close to Dima the course takes a lefthander, over the last climb of the day and then switches back on itself to the finish.
The group dominated by the animated locals went all out to try and run down the Ukrainians on the descent, slowly but surely pegging back a minute or more by the bottom. As the road started to go up again Mayo and Zarrabeitia were the main instigators, Zarrabeitia was the main beneficiary as he launched an attack that saw him chasing the Ukrainians through the left hand turn and up the ramps of the Lamindano.
The Ukrainians were able to take the Cat 2 points at Lamindano (161.9 kms), but they soon had a new companion in Zarrabeitia. As they descended and headed to the finish line Mayo, was still trying to escape the clutches of the pursuing bunch. But Zarrabeitia wasn't having anything to do with this, and had his head down pulling along the Ukrainians in search of the finish and the overall leader's blue jersey (jertsei urdina).
With 4 kms to go the three carried on their collective work. The gap was 1.45 to the main bunch were Beloki, Olano and Garate sat in behind and out of the running. In between were the other locals and hangers on who had been left behind by Zarrabeitia. The three leaders continued to work together past the final kilometre banner in the streets of Zeanuri.
Through the last corner Zarrabeitia was first wheel. Outschakov was between him and Pospyeyev. Outschakov took a wider line and attacked Zarrabeitia as they apexed the turn. Pospyeyev was left behind and Zarrabeitia tried in vain to get back on to his wheel but he could not by the time the Ukrainian rider crossed the line.
The upshot was on a day with the weather and course home made for the local gang, they were outfoxed for the stage by the work of a pair of young Ukrainians. Outschakov took the stage but it was of the Commando Bizkaia, Zarrabeitia who took the overall lead.
Grouped behind him at 15 seconds are a bunch of contenders for the overall. Amongst the group are a number of the usual suspects including Etxebarria, Piepoli, Azevedo, Rumsas, Bingen Fernandez, Santi Blanco and the youngster, Iban Mayo. The next few days should see a real fight with the Basque contenders trying to ensure that the foreigners, represented by Piepoli, Blanco and Rumsas don't steal the local prize. It will also let us see whether the locals can put an end to Banesto's season long dominance.
