Sometimes on the road, the music we listen to coincides with our truth. Allen Larsen experienced that as he approached the Utah boarder at 3:45 this morning with his support van wearing The Cars' "I Love the night life, Baby."
"Hody-doo," Larsen said with a smile en route to hitting Time Station 17 at 5:10. Wolfgang Fasching, for now still riding his own race checked in at Time Station 18 at 1:35.
Larsen benefited from a two hour nap at the base of mountains towering above Ogden, Utah. He avoided a canyon climb in late afternoon heat, sliding from 4th to 2nd, which belonged to Kish.
As Larsen was passing Kish, Stefan Lau was weaving across the yellow stripe until his crew corralled him. Soon he showed good form, leaning low into a descent and picking up speed to pass Time Station 16 at 00:46.
Fabio faded a bit. During his rest from 1:15 until at least 2:30, his crew reported battle sores and painful feet. He hit Time Station 16 at 3:42, nearly 3 hours after Lau.
Earlier, near Fort Bridger, Wyoming, Kish led Fabio by just 50 yards. The space held as the two passed Time Station 15. The Kish Krew was changing vehicles and sent their little red motor scooter to pace and carry replacement tires in case they were needed. An hour and a half later, Kish had dusted Fabio.
Ish Makk also cleared Time Station 16, and with Fasching out of range, they're all gunning for Larsen. We'll see if they love daytime, too.
