Stage 6 - July 7: The Wendy's International Cycling Classic, 35/50 miles

Jarvis takes final stage, Mayolo-Pic retains overall lead

Team RONA report

Canadian Amy Jarvis (RONA) won the Wendy's International Cycling Classic today, the last of the six races in the Wendy's International Sports Festival. Jarvis outsprinted French rider Cathy Marsal (Saturn) after both of them managed to break away from the main field.

Tina Mayolo-Pic (Diet Rite) retained the overall lead ahead of Nicole Freedman (RONA).

Today's race was a 55km criterium, being 32 laps around a 1.75km course. RONA's initial strategy was to support Nicole Freedman in her quest for overall ranking, since she trailed Mayolo-Pic by only five points at the start of today's stage. But Mayolo-Pic just beat Freedman at the mid-stage sprint and increased her lead by another two points. "So we decided then that we would forget about Nicole's catching Tina in overall ranking" explained assistant team manager Jim Williams. "Instead we would go for stage win."

So when, shortly after that mid-stage sprint, five or six riders went on a break with 17 laps left in the race, Amy Jarvis made sure she was one of them. So did Cathy Marsal. Marsal attacked very hard, and only Jarvis managed to stay with her. They worked well together, increased the gap and stayed in front until the end. "When we approached the finish, I had to be patient and manage to stay on Cathy's wheel", said Jarvis. With about 150 meters to go, Jarvis dove to the left and got around Marsal. She beat her by a wheel.

"I'm pretty ecstatic," said Jarvis whose win was her first since she suffered serious leg injuries when she was hit by a truck during the Canadian time trial Championships last year. "Cathy is such an outstanding rider, she's such a strong and experienced sprinter, finishing ahead of her is a source of great satisfaction."

Jim Williams was pretty happy with RONA's week in Ohio. "Nicole (Freedman) placed second overall, we had a girl on the podium for five of the six stages" he said, "and three of these were wins Ð that's half the stages. I think the girls can be very proud of their performance this week."
