Caucchioli pulls off a 168 km breakaway

Alessio's Pietro Caucchioli pulled off the one that every long range lone breakaway artist dreams of when he soloed to victory at the ski station atop the Valdelinares. Leaving the peloton behind at the six kilometre mark he was away for the next 168 kms to take the stage ahead of overall leader and countryman Leonardo Piepoli.
Six kilometres after Caucchioli's escape, a group of three, comprising Gustavo Toledo (Costa del Almeria), Ludovic Turpin (Ag2r-Prevoyance) and Alvaro Gonzalez Galdeano (ONCE-Eroski), decided to commence a pursuit of the Italian. The three managed to gain Caucchioli's wheel at the thirty kilometre mark and at that point had a 2.40 advantage on the peloton.
Into the second hour of the day the first sprint came at Montalban. It was taken by Gonzalez from Caucchioli and Turpin. Over the Cat. 1 climb of San Just, the four had extended their lead to 3.30 and by the Cat. 3 Alto de Aliaga at the 83 km mark the gap had gone out further to 4.40.
Turpin was the first to fall back and was eventually caught by the following bunch at the 152 km mark, whist the remaining three of Caucchioli, Gonzalez and Toledo passed, in that order, the Cat. 3 Puerto de San Rafael at 161 km. However Toledo was to be caught by the peloton on the descent leaving only Caucchioli and Gonzalez to contest the sprint at Virgen de la Vega (163.5 km).
As the climb to the ski station commenced Gonzalez was reeled back in leaving Caucchioli to ascend by himself, and with 6 kms to climb he still had a gap of 1.39 over the peloton. Soon after Gonzalez's capture, De Los Angeles (Kelme) tried to escape and although he managed to get out to 11 seconds he was not allowed to become a threat to those behind. With 5 km to go, they had dwindled to a group of twenty one contenders, including Piepoli, Osa, Shefer, Sevilla, Escartin, Perez and Zarrabeitia.
Zarrabeitia seemed buoyed by the feast of jamon (Spanish ham) he had consumed courtesy of one of the sponsors at the start and he launched an attack but it was quickly neutralized by Sevilla, Perez and Shefer. Ahead Caucchioli had entered the pine forest covering the upper slopes, the sides of the road and shady areas under the tress covered with snow, he had managed by this stage to increase his gap to 1.41.
With the chasing group starting to thin, Osa came from behind and wide on the right hand side of the road and launched a blistering attack, quickly creating a wide open space on the road between him and the others. It was some time before Sevilla, followed by Zarrabietia reacted but they were quickly bridged to by Shefer and the rest of the group. At this stage two of the contenders in the group, Shefer and leader Piepoli both had men up the road.
With four kilometres to go Osa had brought back Caucchioli's advantage to 1.13, behind him there were now 15 or less riders in pursuit. Osa was looking strong as Caucchioli plugged away with the dream still in sight. At three kilometres his lead over Osa was 56 seconds.
Behind, Sevilla tried to make up some ground and the group was now down to six, including along with the boy, Bingen Fernandez, Shefer, Piepoli and Escartin. As Caucchioli passed the two kilometre banner his lead over Osa was down to 39 seconds however by now the group behind him, joined by Moncoutie (Cofidis) who had been in no man's land behind Osa for some time was not too far behind the Itzulia champion.
As the pursuing group closed on Osa, Piepoli attacked and was chased by Shefer, when they caught Osa just past the kilometre to go banner, there was a gap of 37 seconds to the Italian ahead. Bingen Fernandez was hot on the wheels of Piepoli and Shefer as Caucchioli entered the partly snow covered ski station car park and passed between the barriers on his way to the finish line.
With the chasers in sight Caucchioli added the stage to his victories in last years Giro and added one more long range breakaway dream to cycling history. Shefer led out the 'sprint' and Piepoli passed him as they came within the shadow of the banner, they were followed by Fernandez and Osa.
Overall Piepoli remains in prime position but there have been a few changes as others have fallen in and out of the top ten depending on how well they completed the ascent today.
Tomorrow has some mountains early on and a drag race to the end with a flat finish that should suit Zabel or anyone else who feels they can take him on. But don't expect that to be Cipo he could not make the start today, a suspected recurring case of col'phobia or alto'itis that seems to manifest itself malaria-like whenever he faces too many mountain stages.
