Saadoune the strongman - Faso 2002 shapes up as local showdown

Report by the Marco Polo Cycling Club

The team of the Marco Polo Cycling Club suffered in the first stage of the Tour du Faso today. Last year's winner Joost Legtenberg lost several minutes to Abdelati Saadoune from Morocco (last year's number two), who took the first stage victory. The Marco Polo team with Dutchmen Joost Legtenberg, Folkert De Haan, Maint Berkenbosch, Remko Kramer; Belgium Lionel Syne and Burkinabe Abdoulay Ouedragou (substitution for Kenyan David Kinja, who didn't make it to Burkina) had to accept the fact that Saadoune was way stronger then the rest of the field and saw that the main competition for the Moroccan will come from the strongest Burkina rider Pafadman, who was strongly supported by his Spanish team. Crosswinds and the heat made the first stage a very hard one. In the next days the Marco Polo team will concentrate on stage wins and try to help their Burkina team mate Ouedragou.

Stage report

The stage began at 8:30am from Ziniaré, with a very fast pace being set by all the riders. The usual early attacks were all chased down by a very nervous peloton, allowing Belgian Christof Marien to take the first two intermediate sprints, and thus the sprinters jersey at the end of the day.

After 45 km, the race passed through Ouaga, and the riders changed direction so that the strong tailwind turned into a cross wind. This caused several splits in the peloton with a number of riders not seeing the front again. After 113 km in Pao, a group of 16 riders escaped, including last year's runner up Abdelati Saadoune (Morocco), as well as Burkina's top rider, Hamado Pafadman and three riders from his Cafe Baque team.

With 5 km to go, Saadoune put in a powerful attack that proved to be the winning one. No-one chased and he finished with a clear lead on second place, with the peloton following in dribs and drabs many minutes behind him.
