51st Herald Sun Tour - 2.3Australia, October 18-27, 2002Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 8 - October 24: Harrietville - Omeo, 85 kmKannemeyer takes his first stage, Cooke regains leadBy Rod Morris in Bairnsdale The famous Mt Hotham and Alpine Ranges of Victoria claimed another victim in today's VicRoads Herald Sun Tour cycling classic. Overnight leader Henk Vogels, riding for the Bicycle Superstore/Vic State Home Loans team forfeited his grip on the yellow tour leader's jersey after finishing 19 minutes behind today's stage winner. The famed yellow top is now back in the hands of Aussie Tour de France star Baden Cooke, riding for Jayco, while the tour is effectively over for Vogels, as he now trails by 18.11 minutes and in 24th position. The stage was an exciting one featuring four hill climbs and took riders to 1900 metres above sea level and into snow capped mountains with the temperature at just 2 degrees. That didn't deter young South African Tiaan Kannemeyer (Maffra Community Sports Club) and Sweden's Tomas Gronqvist (Malaysia Airlines) from producing a giant double act. That pair along with the luckless Trent Wilson (Active For Life) made their intentions known as soon as the field left Harrietville. At the 21 km mark and with the first hill climb out of the way, the intrepid trio lifted the tempo and forged clear of the chasing pack, establishing a lead of around 90 seconds. Luck ran out for Wilson at the 47 km mark when he punctured his front tyre. Kannemeyer and Gronqvist weren't about to sit and wait for Wilson to get a new wheel, they seized the opportunity to kick further ahead. "That shows cruel cycling can be," Wilson said after the stage. "That's the end of the tour for me now, I won't pick up that time." The South African and the Swede then swapped turns and bonus points for the next 33 km before Kannemeyer found something extra and put the hammer down. Gronqvist clung on for dear life, but it was obvious he didn't have many bikkies left in the barrell. A chasing group of five riders, including Cooke were bearing down on Kannemeyer and Gronqvist, but misjudged their attack by just a handful of seconds. Kannemeyer, a 24-year-old member of South Africa's national road team said he didn't plan to attack so much in this stage. "No, in fact I was going to really try and win Saturday's stage over Mt Baw Baw," he said. "But the opportunity was there early after we left Harrietville, so I thought why not have a go at it." Kannemeyer has just returned from the World Road Championships in Belgium where he was leading a chase bunch before being caught up in a major fall on the penultimate lap, effectively ending his title hopes. Today's stage win was the first of Kannemeyer's international career. With Cooke moving back in the yellow top that he wore after stages 2, 3 and 4, he is now confident he can hold onto it till the finish in Geelong on Sunday. With four stages and 265 km remaining, Cooke carries a handy lead of 1.10 minutes over Swedish rider Jonas Ljungblad (Malaysia Airlines) and 1.19 mins ahead of David McKenzie (Active For Life). "Our team had to work pretty hard today to stay in contention, particularly now that we are one rider down, it made things more difficult," Cooke said. "But we are in a position where we can defend our lead and that's exactly what we plan to do." The original field of 80 riders is now down to just 67 following the withdrawals of Bradley Wiggins (Jayco) through a back injury and Jonathon Davis (FRF Couriers) because of fatigue. Commissaires also eliminated Italian rider Luca Belluomini (Morey & Hurford) for receiving towing assistance. The Morey & Hurford team were also fined and relegated to last position in the team convoy for the remainder of the tour, whilst their manager Jacques Jolidon, a former top cyclist, has been shifted from the drivers seat to the passenger side after an official warning. Tomorrow, riders will face dual stages, a 36 km criterium in Sale, starting at 10 a.m. and then a 99.8 km road race from Sale to Moe, starting at 12.30 p.m. and expecting to finish at 2.50 p.m.
